Strange, unexplained sounds reported worldwide

Peculiar, low-pitched rumbling noises of unknown origin are being reported from various regions of the world. These mysterious sounds, according to those who have heard them, seem to be coming from the sky:

  • In Costa Rica on January 9, the deep hum resembled the sound of distant rolling thunder. Costa Rican authorities assured its citizens that it was merely the sound of fireworks from the closing ceremonies of the Zapote Fair. Many who heard it insisted it did not sound like fireworks.
  • In the middle of the night on January 10, a similar noise was heard coming from the skies over Denmark. Recorded on video, the noise sounds like the rumbling of a train. The man who made the recording said it lasted for several minutes and to his ear it did not have the mechanical sound of a helicopter, airplane, or train.
  • In Kiev, Ukraine, in the summer of 2011 at about 5.p.m., a very odd sound was recorded. The person who recorded it said it was so loud that it actually rattled the windows on the 5th floor of the building.
  • In August, 2011, in Belarus (just north of Ukraine), similar loud, roaring-type noises were heard coming from the sky.
  • Over Alberta, Canada in October, 2011, an unrelenting drone was recorded by Sam S. He said it lasted for over six hours. More here.

What are all these strange noises? Industry and traffic? Military experiments, such as HAARP? Warnings from extraterrestrials? The angel trumpets blasts of Revelation? Some other sign of the 2012 apocalypse?

What do you think?

California Desert Ghosts

My friend Scott and I decided to take a motorcycle trip into the Anza Borrego desert in California. It was spring and just the right weather for the trip. We left Los Angeles about 8 a.m. We made to the Salton Sea around 4 p.m., had dinner and decided to push on. We rode till about 9 p.m. and I was just too tired to go on. So we pulled off the road and I told Scott to take out the sleeping bags while I made some hot tea because were spending the night there.

After we had set up camp, we kicked back and enjoyed the hot drink and the beautiful star show. It was idyllic. We had stashed the motorcycles in some creosote bushes, and when I was finished with my drink walked back to the bikes to retrieve my .45 pistol. When I returned, Scott asked me who I had been talking to. I said, "No one. Why?" He looked at me and said, "I heard voices and they were clear as a bell. So quit messing with me." I informed my friend that I wasn't messing with him and let it go.

We were on our backs looking up into the heavens when both of us heard this laughing, but not normal laughter, but something you would expect in an insane asylum. Scott said to me, "See! I told you I heard something." Along with the laughter, we could hear what sounded like whispering and more than one voice. Dang! What the heck is that? I looked at Scott and remarked that sound carries strangely in the dry desert air and it was probably a pack of coyotes. I could tell Scott wasn't buying it.

We laid back down, and after a while the sounds died down and we were on our way to the land of nod when I felt this current pass over my body, and that's about the best I can describe it. The hair on my neck and arms literally stood up. Sometimes this is felt before a lightning strike and campers are told if they feel this to get ready to jump out of the way, which is what I was about to do. My body snapped into a sitting position. I was about to tell my friend to get up. When I turned to him, he was staring at a point just past my head.

When I turned to look, there was a disembodied head floating in the air a few feet from my face! It was red, but translucent -- sorta like a balloon. It had huge, thick features and only looked somewhat human. As it floated there, minutely moving from side to side, it was staring right at me, but as though I were a bug under a microscope. My hand went for my gun I had hidden under the blanket, but my brain was telling me this would be of no use. I was literally frozen with fear. Finally, I reacted by shouting, "YOU HAVE NO POWER HERE! BE GONE!" With this, the head started spinning and becoming smaller in size until it was the size of a marble, then took off like a shot across the desert.

Scott looked as if he were going to have a cow. He looked to me and said, "That's it. Let's pack and get the heck out of here." And that's what we did. We rode down the road for another half hour, then dismounted and spent the next three hours before daybreak talking, then laughing about what had just occurred. At daybreak we headed out and came by a gas station that served food, so we had breakfast. The waitress serving us remarked, "You boys look like hell." I told her we spent the night in the desert, but didn't get much sleep. She asked us where we had camped. When I told her Ocotillo Spring, she leaned in close to me and Scott and said, "Well, see any spooks? That place has been haunted since Indian times."

Crystal ball for 2012

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the year 2012. While some fear an escalation of world troubles that could result in an apocalypse, others hope that this year will be a turning point for mankind that brings us into a new, more enlightened age. The majority of us, however, assume that 2012 will be pretty much like any other year, bringing its share of both happiness and tragedies. A few weeks ago, I asked readers to submit their predictions for this year. Here is what you foresee in 2012.

Ghost Hunters: Helpful or not?

Personally, I think that most of these teams are helping people. Yes, there are some real whack jobs out there, and they are not helping anyone, but, for the most part these teams help the people that ask for help.
There are, also, people out there just to get on TV. I’ve said it before and will again, yelling at or threatening a ’spirit’ does nothing. If it refuses to show itself, what are you going to do, send it to it’s room?
That may look really good on TV, but it does not help the investigation in any way.

Moundsville Ghost

"This picture was sent straight from my digital camera," writes Travis. "I took several pictures with flash on and flash off, and out of 40 I received this. My cat kept staring down the stairs and would descend a few steps then quickly run back to the top. After I observed this behavior, I took the pictures because my girlfriend has a history with the Ouija board. The downside to using the board is that who or what you're asking doesn't always call it quits after you're done using it.

"I see in the picture clearly the orange form of a person that to me looks like is holding the rail and walking up. I have not edited this in any way and I have in the past taken pictures with large orbs that were almost solid, not translucent. I live in Moundsville, West Virginia and not far from the state penitentiary, but I don't think that has anything to do with this. Just call it beginner's luck in the quest to get pictures of the other side. I just hope it isn't evil.

I have heard people say about other pictures that it was probably a finger or strap in front of the lens, but I know better. The strap was wrapped around my wrist and I've learned to keep my fingers clear when ghost hunting. I thought I would add this lastly to clear up any possible argument about obstructions or moving the camera. If it so happens to be an anomaly from where I took the picture, about 39 other pictures like it have no trace of the color from that mist."

Travis, my first impression upon seeing the photo is that it is a light refraction of some kind on the lens of your camera. Although this might very well be the case and the most logical explanation, there are a few interesting things about your story: that your cat seemed to react to "something" on the stairway; that no other photos before or after this shot showed the same anomaly. If they were taken from the same spot at nearly the same time, it seems likely that they would show the same light we see here. I don't think the Ouija experience has anything to do with it, although I'm sure others might disagree.

What do you think?

Mausoleum ghost

"I'm one of the co-founders of Graveyard Shift Paranormal Society out of Beaumont, Texas," says Kerry. "Here is a picture that one of our members took at a local cemetery at a mausoleum. We are still speechless. We had all walked off except for the lady who took the picture, so there's no way it is a reflection. Plus, the glass was broken on the door."

Kerry, my first reaction upon seeing the photo is that the face is some kind of reflection in the window of the door, but since you say there is no glass in the door, then this picture becomes much more interesting. It certainly does look like half of a man's face, the other half in shadow.

Of course there's always the chance that this is some other kind of anomaly, but I would say this is a very intriguing possibility as a genuine ghost photo.

Let's now examine the other main question about them: Where do they come from? Here are several theories.

The Most Horrific EVP

IN JANUARY, 2007, the Central New York Ghost Hunters (CNYGH), based in Syracuse, New York, were invited to investigate an old hotel in upstate New York. (The owners of the hotel have asked to keep its location confidential.) The investigation proved to be one of the most intensely active the group has ever encountered, and produced an EVP – an electronic voice phenomena recording – that is remarkable not only for its length, but also for its terrifying content.

It may well be the most intense, frightening EVP ever recorded.

THE INVESTIGATION

On that weekend in January, CNYGH founder Stacey Jones and several members of the group went to the hotel on an overnight stay for what they thought would be a routine investigation. They had no idea what they were in for.

Originally built in the late 1800s, the building was in its colorful history the site of some nefarious activity, a fact that might be key to what is heard in the EVP.

On Friday night, Stacey and her group set up their equipment – audio recorders, video recorders and other electronics – and settled in, hoping to document some evidence for the haunting the owners had claimed. Most investigations are relatively quiet, but this night was filled with paranormal activity, including muffled voices of unknown origin, footsteps from unseen bodies and more. Members of the group I spoke with confirmed that it was the most active haunting they had personally experienced.

The real shocker came the next day. On Saturday afternoon at about 3 p.m., two female CNYGH investigators and a member of the owner's family (also a female) sat on the staircase of the hotel with a digital voice recorder, intending to capture some EVP. They chose the stairway because they had heard soft conversations and footsteps on the floor above, although no one was up there.

When they later played the recording back, however, what they heard were not soft voices and footsteps, but something totally unexpected and completely terrifying.

THE EVP: WHAT YOU'LL HEAR

Stacey Jones describes what you'll hear on the recording:

"You can [faintly] hear the three females talking throughout the recording. You will hear a female – the family member – say, 'Hello, baby,' and another long conversation. Those are all human voices. But what sounds like a struggle or attack is going on as well.

"The male [voice] you hear was not present at the hotel. You will hear a cuckoo clock (which was not present) a ticking of a hall clock (which was there); you will hear what sounds like the microphone being moved (which was not touched) and then the sound becomes clearer.

"You will hear a creaking door and slamming of the door, which is real. Then you will hear a [unknown] woman say, 'Get off me,' and what sounds like the woman being attacked. The struggle continues for awhile, and during the EVP you can hear some of my investigators' conversations. After interviewing my investigators, they said they went and sat on the stairs of this hotel, because they heard from an above floor, what sounded like footsteps and conversations, not what you hear on this recording. When the noises stop, you hear the investigators participate in a lulled conversation. They stated that they started to talk when the noises stopped. In their conversation, you will hear a male voice say, 'Help me' several times."

Download and listen to the EVP

Caution: the recording is violent and may be too intense for some listeners.

It's a large file, so the download may take awhile. If you're having trouble downloading the file, try right-clicking the link above and choose "Save Target As..." in Internet Explorer or "Save Link As..." in Firefox to save the file to your computer's hard drive, then play it from there.

"The EVP has not been altered in any way, except it was edited for time," Stacey says. "CNY Ghost Hunters have tried to reduce the noise, amplify and 'clean' it up, but found it difficult to make out exactly what was being said. We invite you to download this EVP to see what you can make of it.

"Please let me know what you make of this EVP. I can't give you any more of the history as we are no longer able to enter the hotel where the EVP was obtained. If you can make out any further detail, please drop Stephen an email (paranormal@about.com) or contact Central New York Ghost Hunters at: Stacey@gotghosts.org"

Central New York Ghost Hunters (of which I am a member) is one of the oldest paranormal investigation groups in the state.

Top Paranormal Events of 2011

2011 WAS ANOTHER incredible year for the paranormal. There were ghost sightings, ghost pictures and video, dozens of Bigfoot sightings and lots of alleged Bigfoot videos. There were also sightings of Mothman, the Loch Ness Monster and other crypto-creatures. There were reports of psychic phenomena, work by psychic detectives, stories of exorcisms and miracles... and a lot more, as you'll see in this roundup of the entire year.

GHOSTS, POLTERGEISTS AND HAUNTINGS

Ghost photos. Alleged ghost photos were presented from: the Horse and Groom pub in Braintree, U.K.; the ghost of former pub landlady; Michael Wright of Milton, Florida claimed to photograph a ghost in his backyard; a ghost was supposedly photographed in the closet of model Emilia Attias; in June, a photo showing a ghostly form shocked guests at a wedding reception; another pub ghost photo was said to be taken at The Lower Buck Inn in Waddington; Diane Berthelot shared an amazing ghost photo taken at a north Norfolk church 36 years ago; The Ozark Mountain Paranormal Investigation Team offered what they said is a genuine ghost photo; in October, an eerie, ghostly photo taken at the Pearl Harbor memorial was released; a photo was released of supposed "X-rated" ghost activity in Ohio; and in December, an Indiana family believed they captured a sweeping ghost on a cell phone camera.

Poltergeists. Bothersome poltergeist activity was reported: A couple said that poltergeist drove them out of their home in Frodsham, Cheshire, U.K.; a series of mysterious fires devastates the home of a family of 11; a family in Coventry called an exorcist because of poltergeist activity in their home (video); a candy shop in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, U.K. complained of a playful poltergeist; and at the Rocky Mountain Canary General Store, staff reported a hair-pulling ghost.

Haunted places. An amusement park ride in Surrey was moved because of ghost sightings; the house where American Idol contestants stayed was said to be haunted; then in October it was claimed that the X Factor house was haunted, too; and America's oldest timber frame house in Dedham, Massachusetts was reported to be haunted.

PSYCHIC PHENOMENA AND PROPHECY

Psychic detectives. Psychics lent their power to: help solve a missing person case in Ireland; successfully locate a serial killer; and a private investigator testifies that a psychic directed him to the spot where Caylee Anthony's body was found.

Psy-ops. A U.S. General admitted he ordered the use of psychic operations on U.S. Senators visiting Afghanistan to try to get additional funding. In May it was revealed that psychic spies might have been recruited to search for Osama Bin Laden.

Predictions. A psychic on YouTube claimed to predict the earthquake tsunami in Japan.

Psychic Sylvia Brown suffered a heart attack while in Hawaii in March.

Steve Jobs, it was revealed in October, sought a psychic healer for his cancer. It was also speculated that Jobs might have had a deathbed vision.

Best Ghost Pictures Ever Taken

They say seeing is believing. And while in this day of digital image manipulation that might not be as true as it once was, these photographs are considered by many to be the real deal - photographic evidence of ghosts. Faking ghost photos through double exposure and in-the-lab trickery has been around as long as photography itself; and today, computer graphics programs can easily and convincingly create ghost images. But these photos are generally thought to be untouched, genuine portraits of the unexplained.

Christmas Phantom Phone Call

"On Christmas Day, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts, I received a phone call from a number I did not recognize," reports Dee.

"Caller: 'Merry Christmas!'

"Me: 'Merry Christmas to you, too....' [pause]

"Caller: 'This is Dee, right?'

"Me: 'Yeah. Who's this?'

"Caller: [bad reception at this point, but it sounded like] 'It's ... your brother!'

"Me: 'Oh, you must have changed your number because I don't have this one in my phone.'

Caller: 'Sorry. My phone just did something weird. I'll have to call you back.'

"I checked with the two brothers that would actually call me, and only one of whom calls me 'Dee'. Neither of them had called. I texted the number and even posted on Facebook to try to find out who called me. I believe it was actually my brother Jay... who died in a motorcycle accident on April 28, 2008. He used to call me 'Dee'. Not long before he died, he moved back to the area and said he wanted to be a better brother to me. Recently, my sister was told by a psychic that her unborn child will be Jay's rebirth. I think Jay wanted to say hi to me one more time before it was time for him to re-enter the world."

Thanks for the great story, Dee. Although we all know that strange things can happen with our phones, every once in awhile there are cases (like yours) in which we know something far stranger -- and unexplained -- is taking place.

Shadow People

ASTRAL BODIES

One interesting idea suggests that shadow people are the shadows or essences of people who are having out-of-body experiences. According to Jerry Gross, an author, lecturer and teacher about astral travel, we all travel out of the body when we are asleep. Perhaps, this theory says, we are seeing the ephemeral astral bodies of these twilight travelers.

TIME TRAVELERS

People from our own future, another idea states, could have found the means to travel to the past - our time. However they are able to accomplish this incredible feat, perhaps in that state they appear to us merely as passing shadows as they observe the events of our timeline.

INTERDIMENSIONAL BEINGS

Even mainstream science is fairly convinced that there are dimensions other than the three we inhabit. And if these other dimensions exist, who or what (if anything) inhabits them? Some theorists say that these dimensions exist parallel and very close to our own, although invisible to us. And if there are inhabitants in these other dimensions, it is possible that they have found a way to intrude on our dimension and become, at least partially, visible? If so, they could very well appear as shadows. It has long been held by psychics and other sensitives that beings on other planes of existence are of different "vibrations." Science is beginning to look at reality, on a quantum level, in the same way - that particles of the smallest size exist as vibrations. Perhaps, some theorize, the vibrations of our existence are beginning to mesh with those of another dimension, which accounts for the increase in such phenomena as ghosts, shadow people and possibly aliens.

ALIENS

The alien and abduction phenomena are so bizarre that it's no surprise that extraterrestrials are suspects as the shadow people. Abductees have reported in many cases that the alien grays seem to be able to pass through walls and closed windows, and to appear and disappear abruptly, among other otherworldly talents. Perhaps, too, they can go about their alien agenda disguised in the shadows.

There's a good deal of overlapping among the above ideas, of course. Aliens and ghosts could be interdimensional beings, or aliens could be time travelers - and some believe demons are responsible for all of these disturbing phenomena.

There is no way to prove or disprove any theories about a phenomenon that is so mysterious, that happens so quickly and without warning. Science finds it virtually impossible to catalog or study such phenomena in any methodical way. All we can do, at present, is to document personal experiences and try to piece together what the shadow people phenomenon might be. Perhaps it's an old mystery becoming more recognizable... perhaps it represents a doorway to and from different planes of existence... or perhaps it's just shadows.

Shadow People: What Are They?

DO MYSTERIOUS, SHADOWY entities drift into our world from some other existence, another dimension, another time? These shadow beings seem to be reported with more and more frequency. What are they? Where do they come from? We spoke with Jason Offutt, author of Darkness Walks: The Shadow People Among Us about this unnerving phenomenon.

Q: The “shadow people” phenomenon seems to be fairly widespread. Do you think they are related to what we generally consider ghost and haunting phenomena?

Jason: Yes and no. From my research, I've found shadow people fit into many different paranormal categories, ghosts / hauntings being only one. However, many shadow people encounters do seem to mirror ghost encounters and are the most common [type of] shadow person encounters: a blacker-than-night, human-shaped shadow that people see walking through their bedroom, hallway, living room, etc. These shadow people are the most benign, usually not taking notice of those who observe them.

Q: How far back have you been able to trace written mentions or documentation about shadow people?

Jason: The oldest first-person encounter I've found was a man who told me he saw shadow people as a kid in the late 1940s. The oldest mention of entities like this in literature I've found was in the late 1800s, although shadow people have been reported in various religions throughout history.

Q: Obviously, there must be many instances in which what people assume are shadow people are just plain shadows caused by ordinary means. Do you have any estimate of what percentage might be considered “genuine” shadow people?

Jason: I’m not going to take a stab at the percentage, because the people I’ve spoken with have seen something real, moving and menacing. The millions of people out there who got spooked by ordinary shadows eventually realize that’s what it was and forget about it. However, there are many, many encounters that are misidentification, sleep paralysis, and other psychological manifestations that aren't real shadow people encounters – although they seem to be.

Yes, some shadow people sightings are just a coat rack, a trick of light and shadow or the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, but these reports are from people who wake up in a haze or just see something in the corner of their eye. In Darkness Walks, all the shadow people encounters are genuine – many of them are while people are wide awake or are during the daylight.

Q: Can you briefly describe the empirical or scientific evidence, if any, that shadow people might be real?

Jason: There is scientific evidence shadow people aren’t real, and I explore that in the book. The behavior of shadow people doesn’t correspond to any laws of physics. They can be explained away through psychology and experiments that have been conducted on epileptic patients. However, the vast amount of first-hand accounts where these entities have left physical evidence (broken glass, misplaced objects, pain when touched) makes me certain these entities exist; science just hasn’t caught up with them.

The Incredible Powers of D. D. Home

Daniel Dunglas Home was the most celebrated medium of the 19th century. Although his name is not very well known today, he astonished audiences, friends, heads of state, and the rich and famous with startling paranormal feats and levitation. His seemingly impossible powers bewildered those who witnessed them, including many respected scientists and journalists.

Did D. D. Home truly possess extraordinary paranormal abilities? Or was he a gifted magician, far ahead of his time, who was able to fool even the closest of observers with slight of hand and magician's illusions? Although there were certainly many skeptics among his contemporaries who denounced him as a clever fraud, they could never really prove how he accomplished his many incredible demonstrations. To this day, there is much mystery surrounding Home.

A CHARMING PRODIGY

Home (pronounced "Hume") was born in 1833 in Currie, Scotland. Like many people who seek the public spotlight or a presence in "show business," Home seems to have exaggerated or fabricated details of his early life and heritage. For example, he was baptized as Daniel Home and seems to have adopted the middle name of Dunglas. Although he claimed to that his father was the bastard son of the tenth earl of Scotland, his father was actually an ordinary laborer and, by some accounts, an abusive drunk. As a baby, he was adopted by an aunt and at age nine was brought to America where his new family settled in Connecticut.

Home may also have created some myths about his childhood. He said that as an adolescent he began to experience premonitions. At age 17, poltergeist activity would occur when he entered a room: mysterious raps would be heard and furniture would move by itself. Were these stories Home made up to enhance his mystical persona, or were they early signs of unexplained abilities that Home would later be able to control?

Although he had little formal education, as an adult Home could converse intelligently on a number of subjects, could play the piano, and developed an easy wit and charm that facilitated his profession as a "professional house guest." It was at this time that his remarkable abilities came to prominence. His early reputation as a medium was made by his seances, which participants declared as uncanny, and his apparent powers of clairvoyance and healing.

AMAZING FEATS

Over his controversial career, these are just some of the feats D. D. Home was seen to perform around the world:

  • In a well-lit room before Professor David Wells of Harvard and three other spiritualist investigators, Home caused a table to move all about, even though he stood nowhere near it. It took all the strength of two of the witnesses to restrain the table. Upon its release, the table levitated completely off the floor for several seconds. When Wells and two others sat on the table, it continued to rock. They could find no scientific explanation for the experience.

Bigfoot Capture Claimed in Russia

The video of a Russian news story covers the alleged capture of a Bigfoot. And there is the poor creature pacing around in a large cage behind the guy who claimed to have captured the beast. According to a translation of a Russian article...

"On December 28... the Military Border Control Federal Security Service of Ingushetia in the forest district of Ingushetia Dzheyrahskom caught a strange two-meter tall creature like Bigfoot, said the agency Interfax-South, Minister of Labour and Social Development of the Republic Bagaudin Marshani.

"A few days ago in near Dzheyrahskom, a hunter saw the creature grab a sheep and drag it into the woods. The hunter went after him, fired several shots, after which the animal jumped up on two feet and disappeared into the woods. Today, the border guards conducted a sweep of the area and found a strange animal.

"According to him, the creature was caught and brought to the zoo.

"'I can tell you that the animal is like a gorilla, about two meters tall, dark in color, presumably a female. It stands upright like a human, snarls, and produces strange sounds,' said the Minister.

"According to him, the animal is very frightened, eats mostly meat and vegetation."

Review:

Not at all convincing, is my immediate reaction. There are numerous giveaways that this is a hoax, and a poorly done one at that:

  • Although they have this thing caged, not once to they provide a good, clear closeup of it. It is only seen from a distance and in shadow. We can only assume this is because a close-up shot in good lighting would reveal the ape costume.
  • The creature looks and moves like a person in a costume.
  • It doesn't even look the claimed 6 feet (two meters) tall.

And if you think this is bad, take a look at this laughable video that shows the hunter coming across the creature starting to drag a butchered sheep. The hunter fires his rifle and the creature hobbles away.

Really goofy.

Do you agree? Disagree? Tell us what you think.
