Why is the Unexplained Unexplained?

The mysteries of the paranormal seem to have been with people are long as there have been people. Ghosts and UFOs have been described and reported for thousands of years. Psychic phenomena for probably just as long. Creatures like Bigfoot and Loch Ness-type sea monsters have been documented by credible witnesses for at least hundreds of years.

Yet they remain frustratingly elusive. Why? Why with all our intelligence and sophisticated technology does an understanding of these phenomena still elude us? Here's a thought experiment on why many aspects of the paranormal - from ghosts to UFOs - remain elusive and unexplained. Read more.

Why is the Unexplained Unexplained?

A thought experiment on why many aspects of the paranormal - from ghosts to UFOs - remain elusive and unexplained

We have no definitive, solid proof for their existence. We have bits and pieces of evidence, and in the case of psychic phenomena some very good data from respected institutions of higher learning. Yet we are no closer to really understanding them - what they are or how they work - than we were 200 years ago or more.

Why? Why with all our intelligence and sophisticated technology does an understanding of these phenomena still elude us? The skeptic (or rather debunker) would dismissively proclaim that it's simply because they do not exist. But that response, in my opinion, is intellectually dishonest and, in fact, not scientific. Phenomena that have been part of the human experience for thousands of years cannot and should not be dismissed because they cannot be dissected and observed in a laboratory. That is very narrow-minded thinking.

But the question persists: Why? Why haven't we been able to figure this stuff out?

One possible reason is that we can't. Now I realize that is not much of a reason and certainly isn't very helpful or hopeful to those of us who devote a good deal of our time and thinking to the questions of the paranormal, but it is a possibility we must consider.

WHY CAN'T WE?

It may very well be that what we experience as the paranormal is - for now at least - literally beyond what we are capable of understanding.

Let's use the analogy of the Flatlanders. Flatland is an imaginary two-dimensional world. It has length and width, but no depth - just two dimensions. And the beings that live in Flatland - the Flatlanders - are two-dimensional creatures that do not - cannot - have an understanding of a three-dimensional world. They can understand a line, a circle, or a square, but cannot comprehend a sphere or cube.

If a three-dimensional object, such as a sphere, should somehow enter their world, they would only be able to understand it in their very limited two-dimensional way. They would only be able to see the sphere, if it were passing through Flatland, as a growing then diminishing circle or disc, but would still have no concept of its full shape, size, color or other attributes. They would experience the phenomena the sphere created but would not really understand it at all.

We might be like those Flatlanders when it comes to such phenomena as ghosts and UFOs. We live in a three-dimensional world and perhaps these things exist in some other form of reality. (We can all it another dimension if we want to, but that label might be too limiting).

Somehow and for some reason, these things occasionally intrude on the reality of our three-dimensional world, becoming visible and interacting with our world not only in a physical way but perhaps on a level of consciousness as well. After all these things are beyond our physical world.

It might be for this reason that we cannot currently hope to understand these phenomena. Like the Flatlanders, we can sometimes experience the phenomena created when they enter our reality, but we cannot comprehend their full nature. We can only perceive them and interpret them in our very limited three-dimensional way, but we cannot know why they look the way they do, how they affect us, where they come from or where they go. In fact, "where they come from or where they go" might have no meaning in their reality; those are three-dimensional concepts.

Strange, unexplained sounds reported worldwide

Peculiar, low-pitched rumbling noises of unknown origin are being reported from various regions of the world. These mysterious sounds, according to those who have heard them, seem to be coming from the sky:

  • In Costa Rica on January 9, the deep hum resembled the sound of distant rolling thunder. Costa Rican authorities assured its citizens that it was merely the sound of fireworks from the closing ceremonies of the Zapote Fair. Many who heard it insisted it did not sound like fireworks.
  • In the middle of the night on January 10, a similar noise was heard coming from the skies over Denmark. Recorded on video, the noise sounds like the rumbling of a train. The man who made the recording said it lasted for several minutes and to his ear it did not have the mechanical sound of a helicopter, airplane, or train.
  • In Kiev, Ukraine, in the summer of 2011 at about 5.p.m., a very odd sound was recorded. The person who recorded it said it was so loud that it actually rattled the windows on the 5th floor of the building.
  • In August, 2011, in Belarus (just north of Ukraine), similar loud, roaring-type noises were heard coming from the sky.
  • Over Alberta, Canada in October, 2011, an unrelenting drone was recorded by Sam S. He said it lasted for over six hours. More here.

What are all these strange noises? Industry and traffic? Military experiments, such as HAARP? Warnings from extraterrestrials? The angel trumpets blasts of Revelation? Some other sign of the 2012 apocalypse?

What do you think?

Vanished! Unexplained Disappearances

History is peppered with intriguing tales of people who, for all intents and purposes, inexplicably vanish from the face of the earth without a trace. These stories - some of the most fascinating in the annals of the unexplained - vary from being well-documented to having the flavor of mere legend and folklore. But they are all fascinating because they force us to question the solidity of our existence.

Where did these vanished people go? A time portal? Another dimension? Into a UFO? Consider those chilling possibilities as you read these amazing reports:

THE BENNINGTON TRIANGLE

Between 1920 and 1950, Bennington, Vermont was the site of several completely unexplained disappearances:

  • On December 1, 1949, Mr. Tetford vanished from a crowded bus. Tetford was on his way home to Bennington from a trip to St. Albans, Vermont. Tetford, an ex-soldier who lived in the Soldier's Home in Bennington, was sitting on the bus with 14 other passengers. They all testified to seeing him there, sleeping in his seat. When the bus reached its destination, however, Tetford was gone, although his belongings were still on the luggage rack and a bus timetable lay open on his empty seat. Tetford has never returned or been found.
  • On December 1, 1946, an 18-year-old student named Paula Welden vanished while taking a walk. Welden was walking along the Long Trail into Glastenbury Mountain. She was seen by a middle-aged couple that was strolling about 100 yards behind her. They lost sight of her when she followed the trail around a rocky outcropping, but when they rounded the outcropping themselves, she was nowhere to be seen. Welden has not been seen nor heard from since.
  • In mid-October, 1950, 8-year old Paul Jepson disappeared from a farm. Paul's mother, who earned a living as an animal caretaker, left her small son happily playing near a pig sty while she tended to the animals. A short time later, she returned to find him missing. An extensive search of the area proved fruitless.

THE VANISHED HANDICAPPED MAN

Owen Parfitt had been paralyzed by a massive stroke. In June, 1763 in Shepton Mallet, England, Parfitt sat outside his sister's home, as was often his habit on warm evenings. Virtually unable to move, the 60-year-old man sat quietly is his nightshirt upon his folded greatcoat. Across the road was a farm where workers were finishing their workday by pooking the hay.

At about 7 p.m., Parfitt's sister, Susannah, went outside with a neighbor to help Parfitt move back into the house, as a storm was approaching. But he was gone. Only his folded greatcoat upon which he sat remained. Investigations of this mysterious disappearance were carried out as late as 1933, but no trace or clues to Parfitt's fate were ever uncovered.

THE DISAPPEARING DIPLOMAT

British diplomat Benjamin Bathurst vanished into thin air in 1809. Bathurst was returning to Hamburg with a companion after a mission to the Austrian court. Along the way, they had stopped for dinner at an inn in the town of Perelberg. Upon finishing the meal, they returned to their waiting horse-drawn coach. Bathurst's companion watched as the diplomat stepped over to the front of the coach to examine to horses - and simply vanished without a trace.
