Will an angry ghost hurt us?

Question: Will an angry ghost hurt us?

"My dad passed away December 10," says Cathy. "Is it possible that he is here? My mom swears that she saw and heard him the other night. He was really angry because she is going through some stuff and getting rid of unusable items. She is worried that he will hurt her. I don't think he can, but you never know.... Can he? Or is that just the grief that is making her mind play tricks on her? Should I do a test to see if he is there, causing some unneeded worry on her behalf or should I just let it ride? What do I do?"

Answer:

Cathy, this is a complicated situation and it's difficult to give advice when I do not know all of the family dynamics. It certainly is possible that it is the grief your mother is feeling that might be bringing up illusions of your father's image and voice. Your mother could be feeling guilty about going through and discarding some of his belongings. This could be just a psychological problem.

Explanations such as this should always be considered first, before leaping to the paranormal. Your mother might need some grief counseling to come to terms with her loss.

Could it really be your father's ghost? There's no way of saying for sure at this point, but there have been cases in which spirits of recently departed (or sometimes long departed) people make it known that they do not approve of the behavior of the living friends or relatives left behind. They don't like it when a favorite object is sold or even moved, or they don't approve of alterations to the place where they lived.

If this is the case, then I do not think your mother is danger of any physical harm. She could try talking aloud to the spirit, assuring him that she means no disrespect to his memory, and that she is just making adjustments so she can move on. She should assure him that what she is doing is out of love for him and the family. (Doing this can be beneficial to your mother, whether there is a ghost or it is just psychological.)

If it is a spirit, you should not try to appease it, even if it does seem angry. If he doesn't like the changes that are being made, that's really too bad. He has to move on just as the living do. Things are not the same. It's your house. Explain that to him with all kindness.

I also advise that you do not do any kind of test. I doubt that there is any need, and doing so might only aggravate the situation for all involved. My guess is that any paranormal phenomena will fade and disappear in a very short time.

Your family should do what it needs to do to move on, and do so with an attitude of acceptance and love. Fill your house with an atmosphere of love and support and I'll wager that all will be well.

Up-to-the-minute reports of paranormal activity and news from around the world

GHOSTS, HAUNTINGS, POLTERGEISTS:

Is the Edgar Allan Poe House haunted?
Jeff Jerome is often asked if he's ever spent a night in The Edgar Allan Poe House. His answer has always been a whimsical, "No." But any lingering regrets on the part of Jerome, the curator of the museum for almost 35 years, may have ended last Saturday night. That was when he hosted popular paranormal investigators, The Ghost Detectives, at the place where the legendary author of Berenice launched his prolific writing career...

Know difference between ghosts and spirits
Richard J. Kimmel: Working with haunted artifacts for many years and on many major investigations, I have been able to present conclusive evidence that there exist two common types of haunting: one involving the interactive or intelligent spirit, while the other is residual in nature...

A haunting in Pacifica? Sam's Castle holds weekend guest captive
Ken Nelson, of Nelson's Lock & Key in Pacifica, got an unusual call Sunday, April 29. Could he come over to the 1908-built Sam's Castle in Pacifica and unlock the door that had kept a young man trapped in the old castle's downstairs water closet for the past hour and a half? The problem was while the door was definitely sealed shut, there was no lever or latch to physically lock the door...

Ghosts caught on camera at Gypsy Rose
The pole dancing studio is haunted. Orbs flying across the screen are clearly visible in Gypsy Rose owner Wendy Reardon's iPhone video footage showcased by the Boston Herald. Some zip across the screen. Others hover in front of the camera, clearly freaking out Herald Inside Track reporter Megan Johnson. Reardon, who's given her seven or eight ghosts names like Bullet, Blinky and Thriller, says they followed her from her Quincy studio - where she used to hear voices calling her name and the lights would flicker...

Are people with red hair more sensitive to the paranormal?

RELIGIOUS MYSTERIES:

Half a century later, still answering Fatima questions
The feast of Our Lady of Fatima, May 13, is the occasion every year for millions of devotees to celebrate the apparition of Mary to three Portuguese peasant children in 1917 and to meditate on her call for repentance and conversion by the modern world. For a much smaller but highly dedicated group of people, the anniversary of the first apparition is also an occasion for exploring their belief that, 95 years later, the Vatican is still hiding a portion of Mary's revelations...

CREATURES:

Bigfoot caught on film ten years after Patterson-Gimlin film
On the 7th of October, 1977, Frank White and his wife, Lorraine, were in the Mt. Baker region of Washington state filming movies of the scenic fall colours when Lorraine suddenly shouted "There's a bear!". Without much hesitation, Frank quickly trained his 8mm camera on what he called "A North American Ape", something that was completely different from a bear. The film clearly shows an erect creature walking through the dense brush...

Mysterious marine monster caught in video
A strange creature allegedly filmed by underwater drillers in the deep ocean on April 25 has sparked intrigue and controversy on the Internet. Theories about the mysterious animal range from a jellyfish to an unknown marine version of the Loch Ness monster to a whale placenta...

PSYCHIC PHENOMENA:

The world of the psychic child
The psychic world seems to be all around us these days. With popular television and talk shows discussing the subject, it has caught the nation's attention in the last several years. Sixth grader Storm Ewing understands what it's all about. He believes in a world many of us don't see...

Missing Earring Dream

"This incident took place in May of 2007," reports Janet. "I just got home from work and went to my bedroom to change into something more comfortable. I was taking off my earring and I dropped one on the floor. I looked everywhere for it and even used a flashlight.

"I went to bed that night and had a dream that I got down on my knees and saw the missing earring under my dresser against the wall. When I woke up the next morning, I remembered the dream from the night before. I got down on my knees and looked under the dresser -- and there was my missing earring. Call it a premonition or ESP, but I thought that was the neatest thing. I have never had an experience like that before."

That is a neat report, Janet. So was it a premonition dream, or is it an indication that our consciousness extends outside the body and the brain, capable of discovering knowledge previously unknown? There have been many, many cases in which people have been able to work out problems in their dreams that they were unable to do when awake.

Here are more stories of phenomena and dreams:

Paranormal Photo Hoax Contest

Updated April 19, 2012

Create and send in your phony monster, ghost, UFO, or other paranormal photos

HAVE YOU ALWAYS wanted to capture an image of a ghost, a crypto creature or a UFO, but just weren't lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time? No problem. Just make one. Not for the purposes of fooling anyone, just for the purposes of our paranormal photo hoax contest. This year marks our ninth annual event!

In this contest, we ask readers to create an original photograph (no illustrations, please) of some aspect of the unexplained. It could show:

  • monsters (such as Bigfoot, Chupacabras, sea serpents, Mothman, or some original or mythical creature)
  • ghosts
  • poltergeist activity
  • fairies, little people
  • seance manifestations
  • UFOs
  • ...or anything else you can dream up in the paranormal realm.

JUST FOR FUN

Such hoax photos have been created since the invention of photography. Most often, they were created with the intention to deceive people and even profit from the creations: trance mediums in the early 20th century showed photos of the ectoplasm they generated during seances; in the 1860s, William Mumler created darkroom double-exposures that he said captured images of ghosts; in 1934, Dr. Robert K. Wilson fooled the world with his famous photo of the Loch Ness Monster, which he later admitted was a hoax. There have been many more examples, of course -- right up to the present day.

Hoaxes such as these – intended to deceive – can hinder and even harm legitimate paranormal research, and all such attempts are to be condemned.

Our contest, by contrast, is just for fun, and all photos will be captioned clearly as being fake. We want to see how clever and creative you can be with the many photo-altering software tools available – or with any other means you can imagine.

RULES

The rules are simple:

  • The photos must be original, entirely of your own creation.
  • You can submit up to three different photos. (Please make sure the file sizes are not too large.)
  • I also recommend including a one-paragraph phony story to go along with the photo, telling us how you happened to capture the photo. This is not required, but adds to the fun.
  • By submitting photos, all contestants are agreeing to the terms and conditions of About.com*.

Send your entries to: paranormal@about.com. The deadline for submitting your photos is May 15, 2012.

I am the sole judge of the contest, and my decision will be final. The winner will be chosen based on originality, how convincing the photo is, and how interesting it is. The winner will receive some cool paranormal books.

I look forward to your contest entries. I will include all of the entries in a special slide show that will be posted here. I'm sure we'll have another great contest. Good luck!

(* Terms and conditions you agree to by submitting your photos: I certify that I am the creator or sole owner of the material I am submitting to About, INC. About, INC. and its licensees may reproduce, distribute, publish, display, edit, modify, create derivative works and otherwise use the material for any purpose in any form and on any media. I agree to indemnify About, INC. for all damages and expenses that may be incurred in connection with the material. For more information, please see our user agreement.)

"There are many legends here in Wales concerning the 'fair' folk. When the Celts first reached Britain they displaced a strange folk know as the Beaker people who were forced to live on the margins, in the forest deeps, the mountains and the marshes. They would steal cattle and, on occasion, children; they were secretive, furtive and could disappear in the wink of an eye. Some believe that these people were the origin of tales of the fairies. We call fairies y tylwyth teg, which means the beautiful family (or tribe). They were often mischievous and malevolent, luring people to their dooms in the forest deeps and the cold mountains. Legend has it that the fairy kingdom lay off the coast of Pembrokeshire, and as late as 1977 people reported seeing a strange craft approach Stacks Rock in St. Brides Bay. A huge door opened in the rock and the craft entered, the door closing behind it."

Most of us have grown up with the timeless fairy tales of The Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson. They are wonderful stories populated by fairies, gnomes, trolls, goblins and other strange creatures that inhabit dark woods, foggy swamps, mystic meadows and mysterious mountains. They are also powerful stories that stay with us our entire lives because they tap into our primal fears of the unknown - creepy little archetypes of the human collective unconscious.

But are these creatures only the stuff of folklore and imagination? Do they have a basis in reality? Is that an idea too crazy to even consider? People around the world have claimed to have actually seen and even interacted with such beings. In moments of stress and unfamiliarity, are their minds merely recalling the fairy tales of their childhoods... or are their experiences real? Read the following accounts and decide for yourself.

Sebastian Polizar, The Gnome
I am now 22 years old, but when I was 17 I saw a gnome, and this is how it happened. My mom and I just moved to Puerto Rico. She bought an old house on a hill that she fixed it up, and soon we moved in. One day I came home early from school. No one was home, so I went to take a shower. I could hear my dog barking and chasing something, so I got out of the shower, ran to the window and saw what he was barking at: a gnome! He was standing behind a tree. He was very small, wore a white, cone-shaped hat and pointy shoes. Everything he wore was white. He saw me and we looked at each other. When I blinked, he was gone. I decided not to say anything to anyone. Then a couple of days later when I saw him again outside my window, smiling at me... then he disappeared. The next time I saw him I yelled out, "What's your name?" To my surprise, he yelled back and said, "My name is Sebastian Polizar." I told my mom and she was like, "Yeah, right..." I told her that I would prove that it was true. I yelled his name out loud and told him to come see my mom. At 1 o'clock in the morning, she saw him. She screamed and she made me promise never to call him again. But to this day I still see him. We moved out of that house because a lot of weird things kept happening, like doors slamming and voices that just didn't belong. - Lynn

The Tomte's Cap
This happened to my girlfriend when she was seven or eight years old. Here in Sweden we have old folklore stories of, among other things, gnomes. I do not have a better word for them - you know, those small little buggers with red caps and beards - kind of like those from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but smaller and more mysterious. The Swedish word is tomte. When my girlfriend was sleeping with her mom and dad in their bed one night, she woke up, but didn't exactly know why. She wasn't afraid, but noticed that something was in the room. The atmosphere was kid of gloomy, grayish dawn-like light, and the air was thick. She looked around and noticed a small cap moving from one side of the bed to the other. She was small and could not see to the floor, but what she did see was that a tomte was moving to the door... and then vanished. He looked as I described above, but gloomy - kind of Hollywood movie-dream style gloomy. It all lasted for about two minutes. These kinds of meetings point to the fact that old folklore shouldn't be ridiculed. - Henrik L.

The Four Demon Elves
This happened in 1967. The weirdest part of this story is that my younger sister and I never knew that our older sister had seen the demon elves too until all of us were grown with kids of our own. My younger sister Clarice and I loved to ride horses. Almost every day in the summer we would set off to the stables. We left very early in the morning, so it was our habit to climb out of our bedroom window so that we would not wake the rest of the family. One morning Clarice was part way out the window, when she let out a god-awful scream and started moving in reverse, quickly! I was trying to push her forward, but she came crashing back into me and we landed in a heap on the bedroom floor. Clarice was white, and I could tell she was really frightened - almost in shock. I kept asking her what was wrong, but it took her a while to be able to tell me. When she finally told me what she had seen, I didn't believe her. She said there were four little men outside in the bushes and they looked like little demon elves. She said she could tell they were evil. I didn't believe in the supernatural at the time, so to tease her (and because I couldn't see any demon elves outside) I leapt out of the window and ran over to the bushes and started crouching down calling for the evil elves to show themselves. They didn't, and I wrote the whole thing off as a very vivid imagination on my sister's part. Years later, we three sisters were together visiting and talking, and Clarice asked me if I remembered the demon elves. At that, our older sister Cristi turned as white as a ghost and said, "You saw them too?" It turns out that on the very same morning Clarice had seen them, those evil elves had awakened Cristi by scratching at her window, laughing evilly and calling her name. She said when she got up to see who was at her window, she almost fainted - it was the same evil elves Clarice had seen. She screamed at them to go away, and after some time of tormenting her they backed into the bushes where the unfortunate Clarice saw them. The scariest part was when Clarice said, "Remember that you couldn't see them?" I nodded my head. She continued, "When you ran up to the bushes, they were still there. You were just inches away from them, and then they disappeared." We never saw the demon elves again, but to this day, we three sisters all agree they really were there. - Tyler Z.

TheGnome Road
I live in Beaverton, Oregon. There are still some areas on the outskirts here that have forests, farms and the like. There is a road called Cornelious Pass, which is where this event occurred. Cornelious Pass is mainly a back road used for truckers or people looking for shortcuts, and I had a habit of driving that road at night. I was driving one night with a friend of mine, and he was skeptical to the core - a person who did not believe in anything "mysterious" or "unexplained." As I was rounding the corner on this dark night, my headlights caught something odd. I didn't see it as well as I would have liked, as my eyes were on the road. What I did see was burned into my memory and has been there ever since. There was something on the side of the road; it had been walking on its knuckles, like a gorilla. It reared up and looked at us as the headlights hit it. It was about four feet tall, the size of a child. Its arms were long enough that when it stooped it touched the ground, even though it was standing up. Its face - one of the images that remains hazy - I only remember as incredibly ugly. It was wearing clothes - and a pointed hat! I swear it. That's what got me when I saw it, what my mind focused on. A little pointed, cone hat standing straight up - like a witch hat without the brim and smaller.

The moment it saw us, it turned and shot into the grass on the side of the road. As it turned, I saw what I can only describe as a backpack. I slammed the car to a halt and turned to my friend, who was pale white and staring straight ahead, in shock. "You saw it too?" I asked. He nodded. I put the car in reverse and started to back up. My friend screamed at the top of his lungs, "What in the HE** do you think you are doing?" I screamed back, "Going after it!" He slammed down his lock and reached over me, locking my door. "You are not getting out of this car." He said through gritted teeth. "Drive!" He screamed. I didn't, calmly looked at him and asked him what exactly he thought he saw. "A TROLL! A GNOME or something! I don't care! Just DRIVE!" I knew my friend had gotten a better look at it than I, and afterward tried to ask him about it. He refused to talk about it again, or even acknowledge what had happened. I remember it, though - clearly. - Jovet

Dimension Shifts in Yorkshire

I live in an area in England (Yorkshire) which is rural but still close to urban areas. Sometimes my husband and I go to the farm shop for our veggies, salad and meat. In order to get to the farm shop, we have to go through my sister's village and past her house, which is set next to a church.

During the late summer of 2007, we decided to go and get some shopping. The air quality that day did seem rather different than usual in that it seemed quite thick -- enough for us to comment that people with asthma might find it difficult to breathe. It wasn't particularly hot, just atmospheric (for wont of a better description). It is instinct for us to look at my sister's house as we go past to see if we can see her or my brother-in-law in the garden.

On the way back from the shop, we had a very strange experience. We travelled along in silence. We didn't even have the radio on, which is unusual for us, but we were happy just thinking about nothing. I was looking out of the window to my left, ready to wave if I saw my sister or brother-in-law. Suddenly, I felt strange inside; a weird feeling difficult to explain. A sort of whooshing sensation speeding through my body. At the same time as this strange feeling, I noticed with panic that the road we were travelling on had slightly changed. It looked very similar, but the worst thing was that my sister's house was completely missing and the terraced houses that usually surrounded it had taken on a small but significantly different appearance!

Now all of this happened in a flash as we were still travelling in the car at normal speed, only it felt as though we were going at a hundred miles an hour for that split second. As we got past where the house should be, I screamed out in panic for my husband to stop the car. At the exact same time, my husband shouted at me, "Mandy, where has Chris and Alex's house gone? My god, what has just happened?"

He slammed the brakes on and pulled over into the side. As we looked back, we could see the road had returned to normal and the house was back in place. Gobsmacked, we just stared at each other, thinking, "What the hell had just taken place?" Individually without realising it, we had just had the exact same experience at the exact same time.

It felt to us both as if we had just taken a sneaky look at another dimension. The time period had felt the same to us and the road was the same, it had just taken on a slightly different appearance. We felt excited to have had this experience as we are both quite sceptical about such things. It was extraordinary and remains unforgotten.

Now the story deepens a bit. We did not reveal to my sister what had happened until the next day. She was shocked and then went on to inform me that on the evening of our event they had invited some friends (a couple) to their house for a meal. The couple had been to their house many times. When the couple arrived for the meal, they told my sister and husband that they had problems finding the house. Her husband had pulled up outside where the house should be and was told by his wife that "Alex and Chris don't live here."

"Don't be daft," said her husband. "The house should be here. What has happened?" So they drove off in a very confused state back up the road. When they came back down again, the house had reappeared!

All of this on the same day. The couple nor my sister and husband knew nothing of our story at this time. To further add mystery, my sister had seen us go past in the car that day and she had seen the couple pull up outside and drive off again!

Not All Shadow People Are Scary

Shadow GhostThe vast majority of shadow people sightings are described as scary, creepy, or even evil. Often, there is no real reason to attribute these negative aspects to the entities; it's usually just a feeling. This is only natural since the sighting of something dark and unknown instinctively arouses fear in the human mind: we fear what we do not understand. Yet, just as there are reports of good, benign, and evil ghosts, we can also assume that there is a range of "personality" in shadow people. Although they represent a small number, some people say they have gotten good vibes from them or even positive experiences with shadow people. Read about some of these encounters.

Reader Report: U-Turn to Another Dimension

"I was out of work and had to go to Motor Vehicle," reports Laurie. "I was on my way when I drove past it. I went to the next light, turned and made a U-turn back to the light. That is all I did. For some strange reason, however, I wound up on a totally other road. Eventually I knew the road I was on, but not for a while. This road was a further distance than the one I was on. I only made a quick U-turn in order to make a turn at the light.

"I don't understand what happened. I know for sure that I did not go any further to put me on any other road. Yet that is where I ended up. This happened about 18 months ago and it still bothers me."

There could any number of psychological reasons for your disorientation, Laurie. It's rather easy for drivers to become confused or lost -- even on familiar streets -- depended on their mental state.

However, assuming you were alert and in control -- and from your description it sounds like you were -- it might be harder to come up with a reasonable explanation. Many other people have reported these kinds of experiences, which often seem like dimensional shifts or time anomalies. Here are a few other stories:

Zozo Encounter

OF ALL THE names that have been spelled out during Ouija seances, perhaps none has caused more consternation than the name of Zozo. Readers of this website and others have reported that this name has come up many times through the Ouija, and almost always in a negative context. Through the talking board, Zozo curses, accuses and threatens -- even sometimes stating explicitly that it is evil, a demon or from Hell. Is this merely a kind of viral phenomenon in which readers of such stories about Zozo encounters unconsciously create their own encounters when they use the board? Or, as Darren W. believes, is it truly a demon? He claims to have had several encounters with this entity. This is Darren's story... and his warning....

I am from Tulsa Oklahoma. I am currently 40 years old and have held a fascination with the occult since an early age. I have had many bizarre experiences with Ouija boards and I am writing this as a warning to people that bad things can happen because of these "portals." The majority of people from The United States holds a skeptical view regarding the scientific evidence of spirits or ghosts, and many people who believe in these things also believe that it is for this very reason that ghosts and poltergeists occur here and exist "under the radar," so to speak.

These Ouija boards are manufactured under the precept that they are mere "toys." Let me tell you first hand that they are not toys and should be used with strict caution, and probably should not be messed with at all. Other countries take a more open-minded view of spirits, demons, and ghosts, and many many cultures have based entire religions from these beliefs.

During my experiences with Ouija boards one particular spirit always seemed compelled to make its presence known. Its name is Zozo. Today, I refuse to even pronounce its name as I believe the mere pronunciation of it can cause it to manifest itself. Too many times to count, it has at first pretended to be a nice spirit, or pretend to be whomever I was trying to contact. But eventually it showed its true self, cussing me, threatening me and others present in the room. Once it actually cussed me using what looked like Latin or Hebrew, and using biblical terminology.

NASTY SPIRIT

I was genuinely fascinated and startled by how many times Zozo showed up, even in many different states and many different Ouija boards. It always wound up being very nasty and commented freely about how it wanted to posses my girlfriends and take them to paradise. When asked where paradise was, it spelled HELL.

One time, after Zozo was being extremely evil, I walked into my bathroom only to see my one-year-old daughter about to drown. Her mother had left her alone in the tub "just for a second" and somehow the water got turned on and was overflowing. Instinctively, she had her face tilted up and was seconds from going under when I grabbed her from the water. The next day she was hospitalized for some weird internal infection and was put in isolation for 14 days straight as doctors tried to diagnose the illness. We almost lost her, and that was when I began to suspect demonic attack.

At this same time, my girlfriend maintained a trance-like state. Her personality changed from a very sweet person to withdrawn and uncaring. Zozo said before this that it was going to possess her and eat her soul.

I was recording music for a future rock project, and I remember jokingly asking if it had an opinion on what I should name the band. It spelled IRON TONGUE, which at the time I thought was pretty cool. Only later when my daughter's tongue swelled up in the hospital to the point of asphyxiation did I realize that this wasn't cool at all! Her tongue became rock hard and distorted her face, swelling up to where it hung grotesquely from her mouth. We took turns bedside at the hospital for what seemed like forever before my daughter began to recover from this strange affliction.

When guests would spend the night in our house, they would claim that they heard frightening voices coming from inside the walls. Objects would be thrown across the room, and spiders seem to come from nowhere. My girlfriend's brother, who lived with us, complained that he couldn't sleep at night because the "conversations" were so loud that he simply could not rest. He believed in ghosts, and though he wasn't afraid of them, he said that it definitely felt demonic.

Lights would turn off and on by themselves, doors would open and unlock themselves. One night in our bedroom a viscous laughter emanated from thin air, and to this day I cannot explain the terror in that laughter. Another night, I was awakened by what felt like hands on my throat choking me. I could not breathe, I could not scream....

After about 30 seconds, it released its grip and I gasped for air. The same thing happened to my girlfriend the next night.

FAMILY CURSE

Yet another night, her brother and I were standing just outside the back porch sliding glass door talking about a supposed curse of their family. I abruptly exclaimed, "I rebuke this curse in the name of Jesus Christ!" I no sooner finished saying those exact words when a deafening sound and a vibration struck the entire house with such an alarming "boom" that the neighbors came over to ask if I had heard something strange. I knew it wasn't our imaginations. I got out the ladder to see what had landed on top of the house only to find nothing.

Things settled down after that, and to this day I believe that whatever made that noise also caused the disturbance to go away. For awhile. My girlfriend broke up with me, and I met someone online in Michigan, where I moved up to be with her. She didn't believe in spirits, and although I knew better, I decided to make her a believer as well....

Another monolith on Mars

Mars monolith

Yet another monolith-like structure has been discovered on the surface of Mars from a picture snapped by the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The picture seems to show a tall rectangular structure standing pretty much by itself, looking for all the world like the mysterious monolith found on the moon in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Jonathon Hill, a research technician and mission planner at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, contends that it is just a boulder that happens to look rectangular, but probably is not. What do you think?

READER REPORT: The Watchful Spirit

"I grew up in Yale, Virginia and I was raised by my grandparents," reports Kathryn. "There were many times that I would fall asleep over my homework while studying in my second-story bedroom and be awakened by a man's voice saying, 'I thought you were supposed to be doing your homework?' I would jolt awake and there would be no one there. When I got to be a teenager, I would often stay at home alone while Grandma went to town. I was able to turn the music up a little and would hear what I thought was Grandma coming home and calling me downstairs to help her with groceries, but when I went downstairs to answer there was still no one home but me.

"I often felt as though someone was watching me, or heard the back door close, but no one was there. It is not a threatening presence, but it is there just the same. I never told anyone until my dad, who also grew up in the house, told me of his nearly identical experiences."

Thanks for that report, Kathryn. What makes your report interesting to me is that your father had very similar experiences. Whenever there is independent corroboration of experiences, that lends weight to the possibility that the house might be haunted by a watchful presence -- and not just your imagination. Whether it is a residual haunting or an intelligent haunting is hard to say without further investigation, but the fact that it seemed to notice you resting over your homework and commented on that might indicate an intelligent haunting; that is, a spirit.

But there is so much about this phenomena we just don't know: Is it a spirit of a once-living person... some other kind of spiritual entity... or do these things mysteriously arise out of a shared subconscious? Whatever they are, they are a relatively common part of the human experience and well worth attention and investigation.

6 Signs That You Might Be Psychic

If you've always suspected that you have extrasensory perception, here are six signs that you indeed might be psychic

THOSE WHO HAVE made a lifetime of the study of psychic phenomena suspect that most, if not all of us are psychic to one degree or another. I'm sure most of us can point to events in our lives that indicate instances of telepathy (communication of thoughts) or precognition (knowing what is going to happen). Perhaps it's only happened once or a few times.

Perhaps, however, it happens to you quite frequently. Can you then be considered truly, strongly psychic? Here are six signs to look for.

1. You know the phone is going to ring and who is calling

We have all experienced this phenomenon, and when it happens once in awhile we can chalk it up to coincidence. Or perhaps there are people who call you regularly at expected times. Those instances we can dismiss.

But have you ever sensed a phone call from someone totally unexpected - perhaps someone you haven't heard from in years? Then the phone rings and it is that person! This could be an indication of the psychic phenomenon known as precognition - knowing something before it happens. And if this kind of thing happens on a fairly regular basis, you might be psychic.

2. You know your child, or someone else very close to you, is in trouble

We all worry about the safety our loved ones, especially when they are separated from us. Quite naturally, parents carry a deep concern about their children when they are at school, off with other children, or away on a trip. But we temper this worry or concern (or try to) with reason and an acknowledgment that our loved ones cannot always be under our supervision.

There have been many cases, however, in which a parent knows that her child has been injured or is in trouble. This is no ordinary worry. The feeling is so intense and persistent that the parent is compelled to check on the child - and sure enough, there has been an accident. Such a psychic connection has been documented between parent and child, spouses and partners, siblings and, of course, twins. If you have had such as experience, you might be psychic.

3. You know a place before you go to it

Perhaps you have had the experience or going to a person's house that you've never been to before, yet everything about it is familiar. This can happen when house shopping, too. You know exactly where every room is, what it looks like, and how it is decorated. You may even have knowledge of tiny details, such as chipped paint or unusual light fixtures. Yet you know you have never been there before.

It could be that you have been to the place before and have forgotten. Or perhaps this is a case of deja vu - that eerie feeling that we've done or seen an exact thing before. But deja vu is usually a fleeting feeling about a brief exchange of words, gestures or sights. It is rarely prolonged or vividly detailed. (See the book The Deja Vu Enigma by Marie D. Jones and Larry Flaxman.) So if you have this knowing about a place you never been to before, you might be psychic.

Within this largely unexplored wilderness, scientists hypothesize that potentially hundreds of life forms exist that have yet to be identified. In 1974, he claimed to have cast foot impressions of peculiar webbed tracks with four toes. It was not until his death in 1980 that a reel of Super 8 film was found among his possessions. The film showed an upright, shaggy haired creature as it made its way through the swamp. However, a boot with a four-toed foot glued to it was also discovered...

Ghosts of Bobby Mackey's

GHOSTS, HEADLESS AND OTHERWISE

Bryan (often a headless figure), Walling and Jackson reportedly have been seen on numerous occasions at Bobby Mackey's over the years, along with other spirits whose lives were entangled with the building in some way. In fact, several people have died unnatural deaths inside the building, which was alleged to be the site of several murders at the casino. During the 1950s, it became the Latin Quarter, another popular nightclub whose owners were arrested several times on gambling charges.

Later, the building became yet another rough-and-tumble nightclub, The Hard Rock Cafe (no relation to the restaurant chain), which was closed in 1978 by police request after several fatal shootings on the premises. Bobby Mackey purchased the building in 1978 and opened his Music World shortly thereafter.

One of the most frequently seen spirits is a young girl named Johana, a cabaret dancer during the club's casino days, who reportedly poisoned herself and her mobster father inside the building after he murdered her boyfriend, club singer Robert Randall. Other spirits who have appeared at the club regularly are Johana and gangster Albert "Red" Masterson.

According to sworn affidavits, other witnesses and local legend, paranormal activity in the club is often preceded by the strong smell of rose perfume. The juke box at Bobby Mackey's also has come on suddenly and played old tunes from the 1930s and 1940s – songs that were not loaded into the juke box! "The Anniversary Waltz" is a particular favorite, heard numerous times by many people. Chairs have moved inexplicably, rooms have gone cold and people have heard their names called, only to turn around and have no one there in the club.

CASES OF POSSESSION

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the Bobby Mackey's saga are the claims by several people that they have had spirits enter their bodies while in the club. Some of the sworn affidavits claim they felt cold chills run through their bodies, while others claimed to have taken on different personalities and even facial features while inside.

The most celebrated case of possession at Bobby Mackey's is Carl Lawson, who lived upstairs above the nightclub as a caretaker for the club. Lawson, one of the main subjects of Hensley's book, claims to have been attacked by several of the resident spirits and actually possessed by some of them as well, including Alonzo Walling. A supposedly successful exorcism of Lawson and the entire building took place at Bobby Mackey's on August 8, 1991. It was performed by the Reverend Glenn Coe and witnessed by Hensley, who also recorded it all on videotape.

For a time, it appeared that the exorcism was successful, but in recent years, strange occurrences have begun once again at the old building. Bobby Mackey, who has refused to believe the paranormal activity was true from the beginning, nevertheless made plans to tear down the building and construct a new club on adjacent property after viewing the videotape of the Carl Lawson exorcism. However, a piece of the ceiling fell on him one day when he was discussing the demolition, and the adjacent property he purchased for the new club was rendered useless by the sudden appearance of a fissure about six inches wide and 60 feet deep that runs from the old slaughterhouse well to the middle of the adjacent property.

Mackey has never built the new club, and he continues to operate at his original club where he regularly performs a special song he wrote, "The Ballad of Johana."
