Missing Time and Out of Place
by Cher

I was leaving my driveway to drive one mile to town. There were woods and few houses along the way. I had just pulled out and there was a thick fog rolling in. Very creepy at night. I had only gone a half a block at most very slowly when I saw a very bright light through the fog. This was very strange since there was nothing near my house.

As I drove closer, I saw a Phillips 66 gas station. It wasn't there the day before. I pulled into it in shock and a man came out. I asked him how a gas station could have been built so fast and he looked at me strangely. He said it had been there for eight years.

I asked him where I was and when he told me I began to shake uncontrollaby. I was 300 miles from home! I looked at the clock and I had left my driveway only two minutes before. It took all night to drive home and I shook most of the way.

Mysterious Glow and Missing Time
by Tras

The summer before I left for college, I participated as a leader on a retreat to the Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. Retreatants are not permitted to wear watches and, coincidentally, among the retreat leaders that had watches, all but two were digital. On the final night of our seven day stay, all the batteries of the digital watches were dead, leaving no audible alarms to wake us in time to make the bus.

As the oldest, I volunteered to stay up all night and wake up the camp at five in the morning to make the trek out to where the bus would pick us up. Another leader, Matt, agreed to tough it out with me. Matt, three other leaders and I decided to sleep about a half mile away from the rest of camp on a large rock outcropping in the middle of the river. The river had carved a rather deep valley, and the base camp was on top of this valley.

Everyone had fallen asleep, and Matt and I busied ourselves purifying water for the hike out in the morning. It had been dark for no more than two hours when, looking down stream, a glow appeared to be coming down the valley to our location. Thinking it was one of our retreat members, Matt and I grabbed flashlights and headed up to great them and spare them the trek into the valley. As we scaled up to a bridge that spanned the river from a height of 30 feet or so, the glow appeared to have moved away from us. Matt and I watched it remain there as we smoked a cigarette, then decided it must be campers down the valley.

We went back to our rock outcropping, only to find the glow had now appeared to have moved toward us again. After a chat, we identified it as a confused member of our group and decided to hike closer to it to help them find us. Once again, the glow maintained distance from us, despite hiking to the point in which we felt we had seen it from below. Matt and returned back to our spot with the light hardly noticeable any longer.

It was barely past midnight as we jokingly talked about how it was too early for us to be getting delirious. However, the glow returned again to its familiar spot, so we consulted a sleeping friend to get his opinion. We asked him if he could see it, he said yes, then told us to wake him up when we had something important to tell him.

Matt and I laid down on the rock to have a cigarette and look for shooting stars. As we watched, Matt told me a few minutes later that the glow was gone again. Sure enough, it was. However, we heard someone shouting from above the valley saying, "Wake up!" Confused, we checked the watch to find it was nearly 5:30 a.m.! There was no way Matt and I had fallen asleep, as we both still had been smoking the cigarettes we lit before we laid back to look at the stars. We credit the mysterious glow for making five hours vanish instantly.

Baby Monitor Time Warp

As usual, the long work day was coming to an end and I was dutifully putting the last load of laundered clothes away in our bedroom when I heard a ruckus on the baby monitor just a few feet away from me. I thought it strange when I knew my husband and toddler were both in the living room quietly watching TV as my two-year-old drifted silently off to sleep curled in my husband's lap as he caught the evening news. The bedroom door was straight in front of me and I could see all the way down the hall to my husband and son in the Lazyboy chair as this ruckus over the monitor continued.

It didn't take long for me to realize the sounds were very familiar. Earlier in the day, I was in my toddler's bedroom putting a load of folded clothes into the drawers and picked up some stray toys and books that weren't being played with at the time. As I was doing so, I was telling my son about the story of "Jack and The Beanstalk" for the first time.

Now I stood in disbelief as I heard the drawers being pulled open and shut and rustling of the toys and books being put into their proper places. But I nearly fainted when I heard my son's voice over the monitor! I kept looking back and forth at my husband and now-sleeping son in the chair in the living room and the monitor sitting on my dresser that was literally replaying the specific events from earlier in the day!

The monitor is a standard baby monitor bought from Wal-mart and is NOT a recorder, but instead monitors the sounds coming from the room as they are happening at present time only. I listened as my voice retold the story of "Jack and The Beanstalk" and listened with familiarity as my son responded in baby-talk to the tail he had never heard before. The incredible part was this all happened five hours earlier on the same day!

I quickly called my husband into the room as he listened to the last part of the story with my voice coming through the monitor and our sons coos and chuckles. He stood stunned and turned his head and looked at our sleeping son flopped peacefully over his shoulder. In disbelief, he asked, "How in the hell...?!" as his voice drifted off trying not to miss a thing. I just stared at him in the same disbelief and we both just shook our heads.

This has never happened before or since and became pretty clear from the beginning that we were listening to some kind of warp in time. I never imagined in a million years that I would be witness to it and must admit, if it should happen to you, it is indeed, one of the most incredible moments one can ever experience!

READER REPORT: Puzzling Time Slip Road Trip

"The year was 1992?and I was 17 years old," reports Ronald. "My mother lived in South Bend, Indiana and my father lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I had made this trip a half dozen times by myself in the past. I always chose to drive at night because there was less traffic, less road construction, too.

"This particular night I was driving from my mother's to my father's. I had called him on the phone just as I left, as always. When I arrived at his house he had a look of disbelief on his face and said, 'What are you doing here?' Until then I had not noticed that I had made?the 370 mile trip in less than 4 hours. I drove an old Pontiac four-door that was not capable of the well over 100 mph that would have been required for that time. Also, I do not remember stopping to get gas, and that car would not make that trip on less than 1? tanks of gas. Needless to say, I have always been puzzled by this event."

These stories of apparent time slips always are puzzling, Ronald. According to Google Maps directions, the trip should have taken you about 6? to?7 hours -- and that's without stopping for gas, food, and bio breaks. Seems impossible, and if your start and arrival times are accurate, it's hard to find an explanation.

But here are more weird stories of time slips:

... and many more.

Why the Shroud of Turin is Fake

Shroud of TurinMany people fervently believe that the Shroud of Turin is the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, its image miraculously created by the energy of his resurrection. Others suspect that it is merely a clever medieval forgery. And both sides have their own "compelling evidence."

I have my own theory for why the much-revered and highly controversial shroud is not the burial cloth of Jesus - or anyone else for that matter. A casual observation and a simple experiment can show that the shroud is almost certainly a painting. Read more.

Why is the Unexplained Unexplained?

The mysteries of the paranormal seem to have been with people are long as there have been people. Ghosts and UFOs have been described and reported for thousands of years. Psychic phenomena for probably just as long. Creatures like Bigfoot and Loch Ness-type sea monsters have been documented by credible witnesses for at least hundreds of years.

Yet they remain frustratingly elusive. Why? Why with all our intelligence and sophisticated technology does an understanding of these phenomena still elude us? Here's a thought experiment on why many aspects of the paranormal - from ghosts to UFOs - remain elusive and unexplained. Read more.

Ghosts of the USS Hornet 1

Ghosts of the USS Hornet 1

Ghosts of the USS Hornet 1

from Robert French

I took these photos with my digital camera while staying overnight at the U.S.S. Hornet museum in Alameda, California. The white "squiggle" near the top of the stairway is in a spot where a sailor who committed suicide while on duty is reported to have been seen. The red lights are battle lighting, which was the only illumination at the time of the photo. During our scouting expedition I also witnessed several unexplained sounds as well as taking another photo of a bed in the infirmary, which appeared to show the distinct impression of a person lying on the bottom bed.

Top Paranormal Activity 2008

From ghosts and monsters to psychic phenomena and demonic possession, 2008 was another year with no shortage of paranormal activity and unexplained strangeness. Here is a look back at the news stories that tend to make us wonder just what kind of reality we're living in -- the most unusual, intriguing and fascinating events of 2008.

Ghost photos

Ghost of Tewin Bury FarmNeil Sandbach

Good ghost photos are hard to come by, and we always have to view them with a skeptical eye since it's so easy to create fakes nowadays. However, there were a few intriguing ghost photos snapped this year that are worthy of attention. The best of them might be the ghost of Tewin Bury Farm, taken by designer Neil Sandbach while trying to get a photo for some wedding stationery. Victoria Iovan may have photographed the ghost of a tall woman in white at the Decebal hotel in Romania. Then in June, at Oxford Castle in the U.K., Keiron Brown captured the image of a dark figure in an underground crypt.

Ghost and haunting events

Haunted mansionnottingham.co.uk

Ghosts and poltergeists made themselves known in various locations around the world. Businessman Anwar Rashid was so spooked by spirits that he abandoned his multi-million-dollar mansion near Nottingham, U.K. Paranormal investigators called it the "most active" place they had ever seen. And near Wollescote, U.K., the ghost of a little girl in Victorian clothes was blamed for distracting drivers and even causing accidents. And back in Romania, police blamed ghosts for vandalism to several homes. One witness said, "The windows started to break one by one. I saw two bicycles moving through the air on their own." Ghosts were attached to celebrities this year, including Joan Crawford, Ted Bundy, Ricky Gervais, and Jessica Alba.

Bigfoot

Bigfoot in freezerc 2008 www.searchingforbigfoot.com Bigfoot Global LLC. All rights reserved

The big Bigfoot story of 2008 was, of course, the ridiculous hoax perpetrated by two dolts in Georgia, who claimed they had a dead creature in a freezer and which turned out to be a costume. Meanwhile, the real Sasquatch stomped all over North America in 2008, triggering sightings: on Mount Cheam in British Columbia; in Northwestern Ontario; at Skiff Lake in Canada; on the Telkwa Highroad, Moricetown, British Columbia; on Highway 101, near Willits, California; and even near Redding in the U.K. And as far as physical evidence goes, researchers found and examined Yeti hair; several footprints, including in Nepal; and a rare fingerprint.

Lake monsters

1933 Nessie photoScottish Daily Record

2008 marked the 75th anniversary of the first time the Loch Ness Monster was photographed way back on November 12, 1933 by Hugh Grey. Since then, more than 1,000 sightings have been claimed. As if to show up for the celebration, Nessie appeared in a new video captured in April by father and son David and Graham Garside. It's hard to say what the video actually shows, but it is something in the loch. And of course Nessie wasn't the only lake monster poking its head out of the water this past year. Ogopogo was seen several times since April in British Columbia's Okanagan Lake. And Sweden's lake monster, Storsjoe, was photographed by Gunnar Nilsson with a surveillance camera. A new expedition searched for Champ in Lake Champlain.

Other creatures and monsters

Creepy gnome(c) News Groups Newspapers

The unusual "creature" that received the widest viewing in 2008, thanks to YouTube and similar viral video outlets, was the so-called "Creepy Gnome", videoed in Salta, Argentina. It was most likely just a small person in a costume, but its weird side-stepping movement freaked out a lot of people. Creatures took to the air, as well. In the early hours of February 23, a driver in Pennsylvania was startled by a huge, bird-like thing that hovered above his vehicle. Living dinosaurs made appearances, too. In August, it was reported that a large, reptilian creature had been seen on several occasions in the 1990s and 2000s on Umbungi Island in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea. There were chupacabras sightings as well, in Michigan and Brazil.

Earth mysteries

Tunguska devastation

The mysterious explosion in Siberia known as the Tunguska Event reached its 100th anniversary on June 30. Although many theories have been offered to explain the devastation in this remote region, it's still unknown for certain what really happened. Crop circles cropped up, but the ones that made news were not in Great Britain for a change. They formed near Goderich in Canada; Grand Forks, Minnesota; Ipuacu, Santa Catarina, Brazil; Boryoung City, South Korea; and Amsterdam. One that did appear in England mysteriously formed just prior to an auto race. The curious phenomenon of ball lightning also hit the news when it terrorized Annie Dobson by invading her house in West Wales.

Psychic phenomena

Cooking with QiThe Sun

Many of the top news stories concerning ESP, telepathy and psychokinesis focused on the research into these phenomena. We found out that the U.S. Army gave University of California researchers $4 million to look into computer-assisted "synthetic telepathy," and the Journal of Scientific Exploration examined connections between ESP and geomagnetic activity. There were interesting successes and failures by psychics: the Prophet Yahweh predicted that alien spaceships would appear on Oct. 31st (they didn't), and remote viewer Ed Dames said that aviator Steve Fossett's crashed airplane would be found in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California (it was). Other psychic masters claimed feats in telekinesis and cooking with brainwaves.

Weird science

Brain imagingATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories

Several science news stories seemed to border on science fiction: doctors revisited the idea that water might have a memory; Japanese scientists said they might be able to bring extinct mammoths back to life; research sponsored by Swedish and European foundations manipulated people's perceptions to make them think they have swapped bodies with another human or even a "humanoid body"; and other Japanese scientists have found a way to extract images directly from the brain, meaning that one day we may be able to watch our dreams on TV. And if you're into mediation, you may need to buy bigger hats because some research shows that it can increase your brain size.

Life after death and human enigmas

Obama and Trumbull

If reincarnation is a reality, would it be helpful to know who our new president was in a past life? Dr Walter Semkiw claimed that Barack Obama is the reincarnation of Lyman Trumbull, a Democratic Illinois Democratic senator and the principal author of the Thirteenth Amendment, which put an end to slavery in U.S. The Human Consciousness Project of the University of Southampton announced the AWARE (AWAreness during REsuscitation) study, the largest ever examination of the near-death experience (NDE), while doctors in the U.S. and Britain began a joint study of the out-of-body experience.

As for human enigmas, meet the girl who spontaneously bleeds without being cut, and keep a heads up for those flying humanoids of Mexico.

Religious mysteries

Alien grey / human hybridc Liza Phoenix

The biggest story in the realm of religion and the paranormal broke when the Vatican said it was ok to believe in aliens. The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, The Vatican's chief astronomer, told the faithful that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God. In August it was announced that a new scientific examination of the Shroud of Turin would try again to verify its age and place of origin. Meanwhile, the Devil reared his ugly head when a board-certified psychiatrist and associate professor of clinical psychiatry at New York Medical College claimed to document an authentic case of demonic possession.

The Patterson-Gimlin Film: A New Tall Tale

Patterson-Gimlin BigfootIf you haven't read this story from the February edition of Your True Tales, you should -- if only for entertainment value. R.V. tells an outrageous story about the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film: that we've only seen a small part of it. He says there's much more to the film that only a few people have seen that shows numerous creatures, some of which are slaughtered right on camera.

Do I believe this story? Not for a minute. But it was submitted to Your True Tales and I thought it was so outrageously creative that I had to include it. It reminds me of some of the wild stories that have cropped up over the years surrounding that other iconic paranormal event, the Roswell UFO crash. There's no evidence for the outlandish claims, but there's no way to disprove them either.

If the film R.V. describes exists, I'm sure we'd all like to see it.

Up-to-the-minute reports of paranormal activity and news from around the world

GHOSTS, HAUNTINGS, POLTERGEISTS:

Poltergeist plagues family home
Spooky goings-on at a Hendon house are scaring the living daylights out of a mum and her six children. Marie Williams believes that spirits are haunting her home, trashing rooms, causing sulphurous smells, opening and closing curtains, throwing objects around and even scratching her. Paranormal experts have all recorded unexplained activity in the Victorian home, in Toward Road, but say the spirits are too strong for them to remove...

Check in to this haunted hotel
Quaint and charming from the outside, Connecticut's real-life Yankee Pedlar Inn is far from it on the inside. Its hallways and rooms are the resting place of many a ghost story, some of which writer-director Ti West's crew experienced during an extended stay while making 2009's The House of the Devil. "We would go out into the middle of the woods and make this sort of satanic horror movie, but weirder stuff would happen to us back at the hotel," said West, an admittedly skeptical guy who doesn't believe in ghosts...

Former vicar buys haunted Dalhousie castle for knockdown £5m
A vicar-turned entrepreneur has snapped up a 13th century Scottish castle hotel. The castle was visited by England's King Edward I, also known as Longshanks, the Hammer of the Scots, and Oliver Cromwell. The castle, which sits by the banks of the River Esk near Bonnyrigg, in Midlothian, is also reputed to be haunted by a 16th century ghost...

Anderson Cooper's whacky weird gay ghost tour
Anderson Cooper is oh-so gay and oh-so not ready to talk about it. That's fine, we get it, your personal life is yours to do with what you will. However, when you have a national daytime talk show and invite a ghost-whisperer to psychically evaluate your home for a segment, be prepared for some raised eyebrows...

Hans Holzer, the man behind the ghosts
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1920, my father developed an interest in the supernatural when his uncle Henry told him stories about ghosts and fairies. For him it was the beginning of what would be his destiny and chosen path for his life span...

New Footage: Colorado Bigfoot, woman sounds somewhat believable
This footage was filmed near Castle Rock, Colorado in 2009. The woman filming sounds, or tries to sound fearful of the creature when she realized what she was really looking at. If that were you, would you drop the camera and run away?..

Bigfoot is an archetype: Sasquatch reigns supreme among "folk devils"
From time to time there are reports that fall under the "Bigfoot" category that are, to put it simply, present a lot of disturbing problems for eyewitnesses. While these "high strangeness" reports (an expression that had become innate to the study of odd occurrences tucked within the realms of Forteana) are in the seldom minority, they are often overlooked by the greater cryptozoology community for a number of reasons...

Why is the Unexplained Unexplained?

A thought experiment on why many aspects of the paranormal - from ghosts to UFOs - remain elusive and unexplained

We have no definitive, solid proof for their existence. We have bits and pieces of evidence, and in the case of psychic phenomena some very good data from respected institutions of higher learning. Yet we are no closer to really understanding them - what they are or how they work - than we were 200 years ago or more.

Why? Why with all our intelligence and sophisticated technology does an understanding of these phenomena still elude us? The skeptic (or rather debunker) would dismissively proclaim that it's simply because they do not exist. But that response, in my opinion, is intellectually dishonest and, in fact, not scientific. Phenomena that have been part of the human experience for thousands of years cannot and should not be dismissed because they cannot be dissected and observed in a laboratory. That is very narrow-minded thinking.

But the question persists: Why? Why haven't we been able to figure this stuff out?

One possible reason is that we can't. Now I realize that is not much of a reason and certainly isn't very helpful or hopeful to those of us who devote a good deal of our time and thinking to the questions of the paranormal, but it is a possibility we must consider.

WHY CAN'T WE?

It may very well be that what we experience as the paranormal is - for now at least - literally beyond what we are capable of understanding.

Let's use the analogy of the Flatlanders. Flatland is an imaginary two-dimensional world. It has length and width, but no depth - just two dimensions. And the beings that live in Flatland - the Flatlanders - are two-dimensional creatures that do not - cannot - have an understanding of a three-dimensional world. They can understand a line, a circle, or a square, but cannot comprehend a sphere or cube.

If a three-dimensional object, such as a sphere, should somehow enter their world, they would only be able to understand it in their very limited two-dimensional way. They would only be able to see the sphere, if it were passing through Flatland, as a growing then diminishing circle or disc, but would still have no concept of its full shape, size, color or other attributes. They would experience the phenomena the sphere created but would not really understand it at all.

We might be like those Flatlanders when it comes to such phenomena as ghosts and UFOs. We live in a three-dimensional world and perhaps these things exist in some other form of reality. (We can all it another dimension if we want to, but that label might be too limiting).

Somehow and for some reason, these things occasionally intrude on the reality of our three-dimensional world, becoming visible and interacting with our world not only in a physical way but perhaps on a level of consciousness as well. After all these things are beyond our physical world.

It might be for this reason that we cannot currently hope to understand these phenomena. Like the Flatlanders, we can sometimes experience the phenomena created when they enter our reality, but we cannot comprehend their full nature. We can only perceive them and interpret them in our very limited three-dimensional way, but we cannot know why they look the way they do, how they affect us, where they come from or where they go. In fact, "where they come from or where they go" might have no meaning in their reality; those are three-dimensional concepts.

Next page: How can we hope to understand?
