Shroud of Turin

This centuries-old cloth is thought by many faithful to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, and that it miraculously bears his image. Skeptics believe that it is a clever forgery. So far, several forensic tests have been unable to definitively support either claim. For up-to-date information on the shroud, visit the Shroud of Turin website.

Readers' Best Santa Claus Sightings

Santa Claus - vintage imageAre you a believer? Do you think that Santa Claus is just a myth created to charm children and get them to behave? ("He knows if you've been bad or good....") Or do you believe he is a real person who has magical powers and a close association with Christmas?

The people who tell these stories swear they've seen him. As paranormal researchers, can we dismiss their claims out of hand -- any more than we would hastily dismiss claimed sightings of Mothman or the chupacabras? I'll leave that for you to decide. Read about their sightings.

Paranormal Webcams

Even if you don't live in or near a haunted house, these webcams provide your chance to see a ghost - or some other paranormal apparition - with your own eyes. And if we're missing a ghost -- or otherwise paranormal -- cam, let us know about it, so we can add it to the list!

Llancaiach Fawr Manor Ghostcam

Photo: BBC

Located at Caerphilly, South East Wales in the UK, the circa 1645 Llancaiach Fawr Manor is now a terrific tourist attraction where visitors can hear about traditional customs and talk about the everyday life of ordinary people over 350 years ago. A house that old is bound to pick up a ghost or two over the years, and just in case there is one skulking about, the webcam's steady eye is there to capture it. If you see something, you can submit a report of your sighting.

GhostWatch at Ireland's Eye

Ireland's Eye
In 1912, Helena Blunden was a 16-year-old worker in an Irish linen mill who had aspirations to be an opera singer. Hurrying to get to a concert one evening, she tripped on a mop and fell over a stair railing to her death. Her spirit, they say, still haunts the mill. Her footsteps have been heard along corridors, on the stairs and in a utility room. The webcam broadcasts live from a print room on one floor of the mill. You can report a sighting if you have one. They also have an actual recording of Helena singing, which was made just three months before her death. You can hear her singing "Pie Jesu" here.

Willard Library Ghost Cams

Willard Library
The Willard Library in Evansville, Indiana, they say, is haunted by "the Gray Lady." The apparition was first seen in 1937 when the library's janitor caught a glimpse of the veiled spectre in the basement. Since then, several other staff members have seen the ghost, smelled the scent of her perfume, and on numerous occasions turned off faucets that the spirit had turned on. Many believe the ghost is that of Louise Carpenter, the daughter of the library's founder. This site has three webcams, one in the research room, one in the children's room (pictured) and one in the basement. The site provides some screen captures that seem to have caught something unusual.

The Leprechaun Watch

The Lebrechaun Watch

Not in the mood to capture a ghost on your computer? How about a leprechaun? The Leprechaun Watch webcam is set up is a hidden location in a field somewhere in Ireland, straddling the border of a "fairy ring" and the Coogan's ancestral farm. They're hoping a leprechaun will go strolling by in front of the camera - and you could be watching when he does. "The fairy tree is the last link the Fair Folk have to the larger range they once enjoyed when they ruled the land - their anger at this loss is understandable," the website says. "We are monitoring the area in front of the oak because of leprechaun activity there in recent weeks and months."

Abandoned Hospital Web Cam

Webcam at abandoned hospitalOKC-PRG

There's not a lot of information about this abandoned hospital on the site, but it seems to be somewhere in or near Oklahoma City. It's also unclear if these webcams are really refreshing or not as some of the images with people in them seem to be static. But they say there are ghosts here....

Knickerbocker Hotel

Knickerbocker Hotel webcamKnickerbocker Hotel

Strange things are said to go on at the Knickerbocker Hotel, located in Linesville, Pennsylvania. Visitors have reported hearing voices, seeing things move, or just having a very weird feeling in the place. Formerly known as The Arlington, the hotel was purchased in 2005 by Peg and Myrtle Knickerbocker. According to their website, "Peg is sensitive to 'higher vibrations'; just having her present seems to stimulate activity." Various ghost hunting groups have investigated the hotel and have come up with EVP. This site offers several cameras that you can watch for ghostly activity.

The cameras for this investigation group aren't always on, but they turn them on for investigations, allowing you to tag along and watch what might happen. You'll have to keep track of their website to find out when the investigations are going to take place. (You'll have to register, too.)

Lincoln Webcam

Lincoln webcamLincolnshire
The ghost of an "Ice-Cream Lady" is said to haunt this old theatre in Lincolnshire, U.K. The webcam is perched up in the roof of the building, and several people say they have seen images of ghosts on the captured video. "There are other websites I have watched and none of them have as many ghosts as you have in your roof - there is a lot of activity up there," says on ghost watcher from Scotland. You can see some captured images here.

Ordsall Hall GhostCam

Ordsall Hall GhostCamOrdsall Hall

"Are you brave enough to watch the GhostCam?" challenges this website. Actually, they have two cameras set up: one in th Great Hall and one in the Star Chamber. The White Lady is the famous ghost that is said to haunt the area around her portrait, and the spirit of a young woman has been seen on the stairs. And this may be the only way to see the magnificent Ordsall Hall for awhile, since it is closed to the public for restoration.

dddavidsGhostCams

The six views seen on this page are, they say, from six webcams set up in a 100+-year-old Victorian house. It's difficult to tell, however, if these really are live webcams, as the site claims, or if they are just photographs. There's not much more information than that, so it's up to you how much time you want to spend possibly staring at a static photograph hoping to see an apparition.

Readers' Best Santa Claus Sightings

12:34 A.M., CHRISTMAS MORNING, 2010

I saw him with my own eyes. I know you non-believers won't believe me, but it really happened. It was very early on Christmas morning, and I just kept staring out into the night sky, thinking about the mysteries of the universe. Then, in the blink of an eye, I saw him! Santa flew straight over the house in his sleigh pulled by his nine reindeer! They were only there for an extremely brief moment, since Santa has to move fast to get around the world in 24 hours. But it was such a magical moment that it seemed to last forever. I immediately pinched myself to make sure I was awake. I still remember it like it was just yesterday. I had actually witnessed Santa Claus flying over head. - Quader4

MY DAD SAW SANTA!

My Dad was about 10 or 11. It was Christmas Eve and my Dad heard a big noise. He got scared so he went to his parents' room and said he heard something. His parents didn't know who it was, so my Dad's Dad got a bat! All of my Dad's brothers and sisters and his parents went downstairs. Santa was there and heard them coming, so he ran to their side door and put all of their presents there. Then he ran outside. Everyone heard all of the presents drop, so they went to the side door. Then they ran outside and looked up into the sky and saw Santa waving to them and saying, "Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!" Best Christmas for him ever! - Faith

I BELIEVE

A week before Christmas in 2006, I was at work and not in a Christmas mood. My job sucked and Christmas was right on top of me. Being 37 at the time, I was a little old to believe in Santa. I had the faith he existed and felt in my heart he was real, but not physically real until... I was in our parking lot dumping trash in the dumpster. Walking on the sidewalk next to me was a chubby old man with long, snow white hair and a long white beard, round glasses, wearing a green flannel shirt, blue jeans, and red suspenders. He said, "Hello, Richard" as he passed. I said hi and he kept walking. It wasn't until a few seconds later I realized I didn't know him yet he knew my birth name. We did not wear name tags or anything. He wasn't a customer, but he knew. I watched him as he continued down the street, and as he came to the intersection he didn't stop to wait for the light to change. It just turned green and he walked out of sight. Weird? Yes, but it changed my mood knowing I wasn't nuts. - Rick

REAL SANTA SIGHTING!

I was five years old and my mother had picked me up from day care in Los Angeles (Boyle Heights), California. I was so excited because I was telling her that Santa Claus came to visit us and we all got a gift from him. As we were crossing the street to get to our vehicle, and as my mother was unlocking the car, I looked up at the sky. It was still light, right before it got dark, and I saw what seemed to be a falling star, and as I kept starting at it I noticed the red sleigh. I said, "Mom, look at that in the sky! Look! That looks like Santa Claus!" We saw the reindeer and Santa waved hi and took off like a speeding bullet. My mom said, "Oh my God...." I said, "You see, mom. It is Santa, but no one is gonna believe us." She said, "I know…." - Francie

NOTICED SOMETHING WEIRD

Has anyone else noticed that when Santa is spotted in all these stories that the person falls asleep. It's like that spirit, ghost, alien we call Santa has the ability to put us into a trance and fall to sleep in seconds. But only one or two stories recall finding presents that were left or finding the presents the mourning that were left from Santa. Unfortunately, I have never seen or heard Santa, but I believe in the spirit of Santa in people. Luckily, I live in a part of the world where most people are very friendly and nice year round. - Mr. Nunster

I BELIEVE

All of these stories have a few things in common, which is really cool. I'm 17 and don't believe, but after reading these stories they gave me the feeling I would get when I was little on Christmas - Julia

"Sobe Bomb" Bigfoot Video

In the Spring of 2008, several teenagers were in a wooded canyon near Logan, Utah setting off a homemade "Sobe bomb" in a campfire. As they are waiting for the bomb to detonate, a figure in the background stands up and walks away to the left. The kids don't seem to notice this creature, as they are intent on the impending explosion (which is rather spectacular).

Is it just a person in the background... or did this video accidentally capture Bigfoot? Watch the video.

READER REPORT: Hamster's Ghost

"This happened to me on November 22, 2011 in Ottawa, Canada," reports Kayla. "I've had my dwarf hamster for almost two years. I went up to my room to put food into his little dish. All of a sudden I saw a brown blurry "thing" float upwards out of the cage opening. I thought I should probably make sure he was okay. I checked under the shavings, where he usually sleeps, and found him motionless in the wheel. I'm devastated, but this was the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me."

Thanks for that report, Kayla. Do animals have spirits, and is that what Kayla saw float up out of the hamster cage? Many people report that they have felt, heard, and even seen the spirits of their departed pets. And this raises another interesting question: Do all animals have spirits -- not just cats, dogs, hamsters, horses, and other pets... but how about frogs, otters, ants, worms, fleas, even bacteria? Can the line be drawn anywhere? I'd appreciate your thoughts about that in the Comments link below.

Here are more stories of ghosts of pets:

What You Need to Know About...

May 2, 2003 marked the 70th anniversary of what is considered the world's formal introduction to the Loch Ness Monster. On May 2, 1933, an Inverness newspaper ran an article called "A Strange Spectacle on Loch Ness" that described how Mrs. Mackay encountered the creature on the Scottish lake ("Loch" is Scottish for "lake"). This was not the first sighting of the Loch Ness creature, but it was in that year that it was dubbed a monster and the report was widely circulated.

Over the last 70 years, "Nessie" has become probably the most well-known "real" monster in the world. Since 1933, Nessie's fame has endured and grown in part because of continual if sporadic sightings, scientific expeditions to find it, and in large part because of marketing: the Loch Ness Monster has become a money-making icon and tourist attraction for the towns surrounding the deep, cold lake.

Although Nessie is not taken seriously by skeptics and many mainstream scientists, there is some evidence that a large, unknown creature really does live in Loch Ness. There have been numerous sightings by reliable witnesses, photographs (both above and below the water's surface), film and video footage, and interesting sonar readings. Unfortunately, none of the evidence has been conclusive, and the definitive proof of Nessie's existence has been frustratingly elusive.

Environment:

  • Location: Loch Ness is located in Northern Scotland, running southwest to northeast.
  • Size: It is 23 miles long and about 1 mile wide; it is 786 feet at its deepest point; it is the deepest and one of the largest bodies of fresh water in Britain.
  • Occupants: The loch is home to Atlantic salmon, charr, eels, minnows, large pike, sticklebacks, sturgeon, trout and various other fish. Seals and otters also live in Loch Ness, but are rarely seen.

Description of the Monster:

  • Shape: long neck; horse-like head; humped back (one or two humps).
  • Color: dark or elephant gray.
  • Weight: estimated 2,500 pounds.
  • Length: 15 to 40 feet.

Famous Sightings:

The Loch Ness Monster may have been sighted as early as the 6th century, but Nessie as we know it today is largely a product of the 20th century.

  • April, 1933 - Mrs. Aldie Mackay reports seeing a whale-like creature in the loch near Aldourie Castle (where Nessie has been sighted on other occasions). The account was written up for the Inverness Courier by water bailiff Alex Campbell and the excitement about a monster in the loch was born.
  • July 22, 1933 - Mr. and Mrs. Spicer saw Nessie on land! While passing the loch on their way to London from Northern Scotland, the couple saw the large creature crossing the road in front of them. Mr. Spicer told the newspaper that it looked like a large prehistoric creature and was carrying a small lamb or some other animal in its mouth. He described it as being about 25 feet long with a long neck. He believed it disappeared into the loch.
  • November, 1933 - The first photo of the alleged monster was taken by Hugh Gray.
  • 1934 - Brother Richard Horan saw the neck and head protruding from the water at only 30 yards away. He said it reached about 3-1/2 feet above the surface, and the creature was looking at him.
  • 1963 - Mr. Hugh Ayton claimed to have seen the creature from shore. He and three friends jumped into a motor boat and followed it for about a mile. He said he could never forget its large oval-shaped eye looking at him from its horse-like head.
  • 1972 - A monk at the Fort Augustus Abbey, Father Gregory Brusey, was walking with an organist when they both saw the neck and head of the creature protruding about 6 feet above the loch's surface. They said it moved through the water, turned on its side and submerged.

High School Doppelganger - Your True Tales - February 2007 - Page 18

Your True Tales
February 2007 - Page 18

High School Doppelganger
by Michua L.

This took place in Brownsville, Texas. For about 10 years friends and family have told me about a girl in town who HAS to be my twin. Back in high school I would wear my hair long and copper red. One night my aunt and uncle came over to my house. I greeted them at the door and very coldly I was shunned by my aunt. I wondered why she was ignoring me, and soon my mom had to question why she was mad. "Now she says hi to us. At the mall when she was with her friends, she just walked past us."

Both mom and I looked at each other. I had been grounded and not allowed to go anywhere because my grades were low. I explained to her that it couldn't have been me. Once she cooled down, she began to joke about it and said that this girl must have been my twin.

Three years after high school, I decided to dye my hair jet black and sport a more "goth" look to be more "individual" (yea right). I kept having friends call me up claiming that I had been in clubs dancing on tables and ignoring them and being loud. I have never been to a club in my life. (I don't smoke or drink or dance.) I thought maybe my look was too common and in the dark with the smoke they must have seen things.

Two years ago I had a student who works for the trade school I work for come up to me with a big smile and hugged me. I smiled back but was surprised at the greeting. "Long time I haven't seen you," he said, while his arms hugged tighter. I pretended like I knew who he was because I didn't want to be rude, but he kept talking. "I remember when we were in choir together. You remember that, Cindy?" I pushed him away slightly and eased to him that my name was not Cindy. His eyes opened wide and mouth hung open. "But you look exactly like her." His face grew red. "You must be her twin sister." I shook my head slowly. "No, sir. I only have two sisters and neither of them are named Cindy." He walked away and I could tell he was still thinking.

The most recent thing that happened was two weeks ago. I still work at the Career College in Brownsville, Texas and we usually have local banks come to our campus and promote to the students and staff. A very lovely young girl came over from a bank and was requesting permission to go back to the lounge. I told her to go and we started talking about the bank's promotion. Out of no where she stopped and smiled and said, "Wait a minute... you already know all this." I was confused and laughed with her. "No, what do you mean?" "I spoke to you early this morning at the St. Joe school? Yes, it was you. I remember. Even your hair was the same." I assured her it had not been me and she didn't want to believe me.

The weird thing is that about one month ago I cut off all my hair, dyed it auburn and got extensions on the bottom, which I have in a bun. Whoever this girl that looks like me is must have me under constant supervision since she always copies my hair styles! I don't know what's going on, but I hope to one day run into this look-alike!

Animals Sealed in Stone

MORE AMAZING CASES

Live toads and frogs have also popped out from inside impossible tight and enclosed spaces within trees that were being cut open:

  • Toad in an elm tree. The French Academy of Sciences published an account in a 1719 edition of it Memories of the felling of a large elm tree. In the exact center of the trunk, about four feet above the root, was found "a live toad, middle-sized but lean and filling up the whole vacant space."
  • 68 toads in a tree. The Uitenhage Times of South Africa in 1876 printed the experience of timbermen who were cutting a tree into planks, when deep inside of it a hole was found containing 68 small toads, each about the size of a grape. "They were of a light brown, almost yellow color, and perfectly healthy, hopping about and away as if nothing had happened. All about them was solid yellow wood, with nothing to indicate how they could have got there, how long they had been there, or how they could have lived without food, drink, or air."

Odder still, it is not just natural stone and trees in which these impossibles occur:

  • Toad in a plaster wall. When a castle wall was being demolished in September 1770, a live toad was plucked from the solid plaster. That wall had stood undisturbed for more than 40 years.
  • Frogs in a concrete floor. Renowned biologist Julian Huxley received a letter from a gas fitter in Devonshire, England, who had broken up some concrete flooring to install some pipe extensions: "My mate was at work with a sledge hammer when he dropped it suddenly and said, 'That looks like a frog's leg.' We both bent down and there was the frog. [The] sledge was set aside and I cut the rest of the block carefully. We released 23 perfectly formed but minute frogs which all hopped away to the flower garden."
  • Turtle in concrete. In 1976, a Fort Worth, Texas construction crew was breaking up some concrete they had set just a year before. Within the broken concrete, a living green turtle was found in an air pocket that matched the shape of the creature's body. If it had somehow got in when the concrete was poured a year earlier, how did it survive over that time? Ironically, the poor turtle died a few days after its release.

There are no easy explanations for these incredible anecdotes. Those who found the creatures nearly always state that there was no discernable way - no small hole, crack, or fissure - by which they could have gotten into these pockets inside the rock. And the pockets are always about the exact size of the animals within - some even bearing an impression of the animal, as if the rock had been cast around it. Even if a fertilized egg of a toad or frog had somehow seeped into the rock cavity, what did it live on? What did it eat, drink and breathe to grow, in some cases, to full size? Being unable to move inside the rock, how did its muscles develop so that it could hop away upon being released? Geologists tell us that rock is formed over thousands of years. How old are these animals?

The most incredible of such anecdotes was recorded in 1856 in France. Workmen laboring in a tunnel for a railway line were cutting through Jurassic limestone when a large creature stumbled out from inside it. It fluttered its wings, made a croaking noise and dropped dead. According to the workers, the creature had a 10-foot wingspan, four legs joined by a membrane, black leathery skin, talons for feet, and a toothed mouth. A local student of paleontology identified the animal as a pterodactyl!

Reaper Sighting in Utah

I was at my house in Layton, Utah about ready to go to bed. My wife had been lying down in bed for a few minutes. Our small dog would always sleep in our room. I went to grab the dog before I went to bed; he had gone out in the living room.

When I had almost got to him, he started growling and shaking (he never did that). I went to pick him up, but I looked up first. Standing in front of me was something so black -- all I can say is that it was blacker than pitch black. I guess it was about 6'5 to 7' tall, had a black cloak, no face, no smell. It turned and looked at me -- just the head, not the body -- then turned its head back straight with its body and took off through the wall.

I was scared and shaking. The dog had peed on the floor. It took the dog about 20 minutes to calm down. I went to bed a couple of hours later.

The next day, I was trying to figure out what this thing was. I don't know... I felt it was passing through or was going somewhere else. Was it the Grim Reaper? Was it an evil spirit? I don't know. Has anyone else seen this thing or something like it? I know I'm not crazy I saw it for about five seconds.

READER REPORT: Astonishing SD card coincidence

"Recently, I heard from a friend that a former co-worker of ours had passed," reports Laura. "She hung herself, and her children found her. I had not seen this woman for over two years with no contact.

"The day after I was told, my husband brought home a small SD memory card he found in the back of a moving van that he used for work. Imagine the proverbial needle in a haystack: a 24-foot box truck and a tiny 1/4-inch SD card. He saw it and brought it to me because I was trying to move pictures from my old phone to my new one, and we thought this would work.

"He put in the SD card and opened the files. I glanced at them and had to walk away. The pictures were of my former co-worker, her children, birthday cakes... all happy, ?smiling times! How did they get to me through someone who had never met her? This is blowing me away! I have made arrangements to get the SD ?card to her sister. She will think I am crazy!"

That is an amazing coincidence, to say the least, Laura. Read about these other incredible coincidences that will blow your mind.

Up-to-the-minute reports of paranormal activity and news from around the world

LOST WORLDS:

Mysterious manuscript's code has been cracked, 'Prophet of God' claims
The Voynich Manuscript's unintelligible writings and strange illustrations have defied every attempt at understanding their meaning. Written in "alien" characters, illustrated with sketches, and dating back hundreds of years, the Voynich Manuscript has puzzled cryptographers, historians and bibliophiles for centuries. And now the mystery has finally come to an end, according to a businessman from Finland named Viekko Latvala, a self described "prophet of god," who says he has decoded the book and unlocked the secrets of the world's most mysterious manuscript...

GHOSTS, HAUNTED PLACES AND POLTERGEISTS:

Is Raynham Hall haunted?
Oyster Bay has its fair share of history and Raynham Hall has been a major part of it. The Townsend family built the home and lived there for generations. During the American Revolution, the family served as spies for Gen. George Washington, even as they were forced to house King George III's soldiers. Now, even though the home is a museum, some believe there are occupants still roaming the floors. But who are they?..

UFOs and the paranormal with Malcolm Robinson: Ghosts - some of my own experiences
Malcolm Robinson looks at his own experiences with the paranormal. "The technologist who says that these things cannot be so because my instruments do not show them to be so, invites the answer, 'then build a better instrument'. No true scientist would be guilty of such arrogance because he or she is always searching for a better understanding of ourselves and the cosmos. Only the bigoted believe that they per se know it all. The open minded realise that we know practically nothing"...

Strange Loch Ness images on Google Earth
Readers may remember the Sun newspaper article from two years ago which claimed to show a strange object on Loch Ness visible from Google Earth. The image is shown below but a close inspection plainly reveals it to be one of the many cruiser boats with its wash rippling in its wake. However, a couple of months ago, some stranger looking images revealed themselves when scanning the same Google image of Loch Ness...

Lair of the beasts: Keep out!
Nick Redfern: Area 51, Hangar 18, Montauk, and the Dulce Base: these are just a handful of the many and varied select, highly-classified installations about which the governments of the United States, Australia, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and elsewhere prefer we, the general public, remain steadfastly ignorant. One of the strangest things that I uncovered during the course of the research for the book was the sheer number of stories linking cryptozoological creatures with secret installations. Paranormal Thanksgivings

Thanksgiving Shadow Giant

This incident happened to me when I was very young, and it still chills me to the bone to this very day. My parents, my brother and I went down to Virginia to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins for Thanksgiving. Since my cousins' house was full of relatives, my family got the basement to sleep in. My brother and I both got cots to sleep on and my parents on the roll-out couch. The basement was located on the lower level of the house and there were twin double-glass doors (covered by a thin white curtain) at the back of the basement that led into the backyard. My brother's cot was closest to these doors.

One night I awoke and rolled over, wondering what had awakened me. For some reason, the backyard light was on and I distinctly remembered hearing my aunt say that they would turn it off so we could sleep. So why was it on? I glanced at my sleeping parents and then back at the the light shining through the white curtain.

That's when I saw it: an enormous dark shadow was standing outside. I could only see the outline of it since the curtain was drawn. It had to of been at least 9 feet tall and its "arms" (or were they wings?) were stretched out on either side, reaching at least 5 feet in length. And it just STOOD there! Didn't move. Didn't do anything.

Terrified, I squeaked out, "Dad!" to no avail. I looked at my father sleeping soundly on the bed next to me and then my brother sleeping close to the double doors and the thing on the other side. Deciding to awake my brother instead, I scrambled out of the cot and went to move toward him when I heard a strange, scratching voice say, "They can't hear you, Lindsay."

I remember almost jumping completely out of my skin! To be addressed directly by an unknown enitity is the scariest thing to happen to you, believe me! I quickly crawled back into my cot, tossed the covers over my head, and began sobbing and shaking uncontrollably until I finally fell back to sleep. (The thing was still outside in the light when I fell asleep.)

The next morning, I told my parents what happened and they just laughed, saying it was probably just a nightmare. I know what I saw though. I can still remember what it felt like to touch the freezing cold basement floor with my bare feet.

Later in the day, something weird happened. I overheard my grandmother on the phone with someone. I didn't catch everything she was saying, but I did catch a certain sentence which was: "Well maybe that is what Lindsay saw outside the double doors last night." I ran upstairs and asked my parents why they told everyone what I saw, and they both looked at me and insisted they didn't tell anyone because they were certain I just had a dream. So I confronted my grandmother and asked her about what she said on the phone and she looked at me blankly and said that she hadn't been talking to anyone on the phone, that she had been in the kitchen the entire day, helping with the preparation of the turkey. My Aunt even vouched for her.

To this day, I am mystified about what happened to me that Thanksgiving all those years ago. I know it wasn't a dream. And what would've happened had I thrown back the curtain to reveal what the shadow creature was on the other side?

The Ancient Secrets of Levitation

Did ancient civilizations possess knowledge that has since been lost to science? Were amazing technologies available to the ancient Egyptians that enabled them to construct the pyramids - technologies that have somehow been forgotten?

The ruins of several ancient civilizations - from Stonehenge to the pyramids - show that they used massive stones to construct their monuments. A basic question is why? Why use stone pieces of such enormous size and weight when the same structures could have been constructed with more easily managed smaller blocks - much like we use bricks and cinderblocks today?

Could part of the answer be that these ancients had a method of lifting and moving these massive stones - some weighing several tons - that made the task as easy and manageable as lifting a two-pound brick? The ancients, some researchers suggest, may have mastered the art of levitation, through sonics or some other obscure method, that allowed them to defy gravity and manipulate massive objects with ease.

THE EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS

How the great pyramids of Egypt were built has been the subject of debate for millennia. The fact is, no one really knows for certain exactly how they were constructed. The current estimates of mainstream science contends that it took a workforce of 4,000 to 5,000 men 20 years to build the Great Pyramid using ropes, pulleys, ramps, ingenuity and brute force.

And that very well may have been the case. But there is an intriguing passage in a history text by the 10th century Arab historian, Abul Hasan Ali Al-Masudi, known as the Herodotus of the Arabs. Al-Masudi had traveled much of the known world in his day before settling in Egypt, and he had written a 30-volume history of the world. He too was struck by the magnificence of the Egyptian pyramids and wrote about how their great stone blocks were transported. First, he said, a "magic papyrus" (paper) was placed under the stone to be moved. Then the stone was struck with a metal rod that caused the stone to levitate and move along a path paved with stones and fenced on either side by metal poles. The stone would travel along the path, wrote Al-Masudi, for a distance of about 50 meters and then settle to the ground. The process would then be repeated until the builders had the stone where they wanted it.

Considering that the pyramids were already thousands of years old when Al-Masudi wrote this explanation, we have to wonder where he got his information. Was it part of an oral history that was passed down from generation to generation in Egypt? The unusual details of the story raise that possibility. Or was this just a fanciful story concocted by a talented writer who - like many who marvel at the pyramids today - concluded that there must have been some extraordinary magical forces employed to build such a magnificent structure?

If we take the story at face value, what kind of levitation forces were involved? Did the striking of the rock create vibrations that resulted in sonic levitation? Or did the layout of stones and rods create a magnetic levitation? If so, the science accounting for either scenario is unknown to us today.

OTHER ASTONISHING MEGALITHS

The Egyptian pyramids are not the only ancient structures constructed of huge blocks of stone. Far from it. Great temples and monuments around the world contain stone components of incredible size, yet little is known about their means of construction.

  • The Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek, Lebanon has a foundation that contains the three largest stone blocks ever used in a man-made structure. Each block is estimated to weigh as much as 1,000 tons! No super crane in existence today could lift one, yet they are positioned together with such precision that not even a needle could fit between them. Nearby is an even bigger stone. Known as Hajar el Hibla - the Stone of the Pregnant Woman - it lies abandoned in its quarry, never used. But the giant rectangular block is the largest piece of stone ever cut by humans, weighing an incredible 1,200 tons. It is estimated that it would require the strength of 16,000 men to even budge it, and represents a formidable challenge to 20th century machines and technology.
  • On an isolated plateau at Tiahuanaco Bolivia, 13,000 feet above sea level, stands an impressive monument called Puerta del Sol, or Sun Gate. The elaborately carved gate weighs an estimated 10 tons, and how it arrived at its present location is a mystery.
  • Nan Madol, sometimes called "the Machu Pichu of the Pacific," is a great ruins on the island of Pohnpei, capitol of the Federated States of Micronesia. This lost city, constructed around 200 B.C., is made up of hundreds of stacked stone logs, each about 18-feet-long and several feet in diameter. The logs, stacked like cordwood, constitute walls that are 40 feet high and 18 feet thick. Each stone log is estimated to weigh about 2.5 tons. How they were moved and lifted into position is unknown.

What was the secret these diverse and ancient cultures possessed to manipulate these great stone blocks? A massive supply of slave labor straining human muscle and ingenuity to their limits? Or was there another more mysterious way? It's remarkable that these cultures leave no record of how these structures were constructed. However, "in almost every culture where megaliths exist," according to 432:Cosmic Key, "a legend also exists that the huge stones were moved by acoustic means - either by the chanted spells of magicians, by song, by striking with a magic wand or rod (to produce acoustic resonance), or by trumpets, gongs, lyres, cymbals or whistles."
