Reader Report: U-Turn to Another Dimension

"I was out of work and had to go to Motor Vehicle," reports Laurie. "I was on my way when I drove past it. I went to the next light, turned and made a U-turn back to the light. That is all I did. For some strange reason, however, I wound up on a totally other road. Eventually I knew the road I was on, but not for a while. This road was a further distance than the one I was on. I only made a quick U-turn in order to make a turn at the light.

"I don't understand what happened. I know for sure that I did not go any further to put me on any other road. Yet that is where I ended up. This happened about 18 months ago and it still bothers me."

There could any number of psychological reasons for your disorientation, Laurie. It's rather easy for drivers to become confused or lost -- even on familiar streets -- depended on their mental state.

However, assuming you were alert and in control -- and from your description it sounds like you were -- it might be harder to come up with a reasonable explanation. Many other people have reported these kinds of experiences, which often seem like dimensional shifts or time anomalies. Here are a few other stories:

READER REPORT: The Watchful Spirit

"I grew up in Yale, Virginia and I was raised by my grandparents," reports Kathryn. "There were many times that I would fall asleep over my homework while studying in my second-story bedroom and be awakened by a man's voice saying, 'I thought you were supposed to be doing your homework?' I would jolt awake and there would be no one there. When I got to be a teenager, I would often stay at home alone while Grandma went to town. I was able to turn the music up a little and would hear what I thought was Grandma coming home and calling me downstairs to help her with groceries, but when I went downstairs to answer there was still no one home but me.

"I often felt as though someone was watching me, or heard the back door close, but no one was there. It is not a threatening presence, but it is there just the same. I never told anyone until my dad, who also grew up in the house, told me of his nearly identical experiences."

Thanks for that report, Kathryn. What makes your report interesting to me is that your father had very similar experiences. Whenever there is independent corroboration of experiences, that lends weight to the possibility that the house might be haunted by a watchful presence -- and not just your imagination. Whether it is a residual haunting or an intelligent haunting is hard to say without further investigation, but the fact that it seemed to notice you resting over your homework and commented on that might indicate an intelligent haunting; that is, a spirit.

But there is so much about this phenomena we just don't know: Is it a spirit of a once-living person... some other kind of spiritual entity... or do these things mysteriously arise out of a shared subconscious? Whatever they are, they are a relatively common part of the human experience and well worth attention and investigation.

READER REPORT: Puzzling Time Slip Road Trip

"The year was 1992?and I was 17 years old," reports Ronald. "My mother lived in South Bend, Indiana and my father lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I had made this trip a half dozen times by myself in the past. I always chose to drive at night because there was less traffic, less road construction, too.

"This particular night I was driving from my mother's to my father's. I had called him on the phone just as I left, as always. When I arrived at his house he had a look of disbelief on his face and said, 'What are you doing here?' Until then I had not noticed that I had made?the 370 mile trip in less than 4 hours. I drove an old Pontiac four-door that was not capable of the well over 100 mph that would have been required for that time. Also, I do not remember stopping to get gas, and that car would not make that trip on less than 1? tanks of gas. Needless to say, I have always been puzzled by this event."

These stories of apparent time slips always are puzzling, Ronald. According to Google Maps directions, the trip should have taken you about 6? to?7 hours -- and that's without stopping for gas, food, and bio breaks. Seems impossible, and if your start and arrival times are accurate, it's hard to find an explanation.

But here are more weird stories of time slips:

... and many more.

READER REPORT: Husband's voice from beyond

"My husband Steve died on the 3rd of December last year after a long illness," reports Kathy. "He was 58. The morning after his funeral, the phone rang. No one answered, but my husband's voice was left on my answering machine! He just said my name in a raspy voice, like he did when he was ill. It really shook me, and everyone who has listened to it says it is him. The message is still on my machine, and I can't bring myself to delete it."

Thanks for that chilling report, Kathy. Perhaps if you care to, you can send us a copy of the recording. There have been many reports of these kinds of ghostly or phantom phone calls, and many cannot be just dismissed as crossed lines or other phone equipment problems. Check these out:

READER REPORT: The Ghost Bride

"This took place in Essex, United Kingdom," reports S.C. "My son was out on his swing when suddenly he came running in and he looked ever so pale. I asked him what was wrong and he said he saw someone standing at the gate at the end of the garden with a wedding dress, red curly hair, and eyes with a black rectangle over them... and then it disappeared. We went out and looked over the field at the end of the garden and we could not see the lady anywhere. Then at night, he screamed in the kitchen and he said he saw her again standing at the gate."

Some might write this off as a child's active imagination, S.C., but I'm more inclined to think there's something to this very good sighting. The child's description is quite detailed, and the fact that he saw it twice is also rather compelling.

READER REPORT: Hamster's Ghost

"This happened to me on November 22, 2011 in Ottawa, Canada," reports Kayla. "I've had my dwarf hamster for almost two years. I went up to my room to put food into his little dish. All of a sudden I saw a brown blurry "thing" float upwards out of the cage opening. I thought I should probably make sure he was okay. I checked under the shavings, where he usually sleeps, and found him motionless in the wheel. I'm devastated, but this was the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me."

Thanks for that report, Kayla. Do animals have spirits, and is that what Kayla saw float up out of the hamster cage? Many people report that they have felt, heard, and even seen the spirits of their departed pets. And this raises another interesting question: Do all animals have spirits -- not just cats, dogs, hamsters, horses, and other pets... but how about frogs, otters, ants, worms, fleas, even bacteria? Can the line be drawn anywhere? I'd appreciate your thoughts about that in the Comments link below.

Here are more stories of ghosts of pets:

READER REPORT: Astonishing SD card coincidence

"Recently, I heard from a friend that a former co-worker of ours had passed," reports Laura. "She hung herself, and her children found her. I had not seen this woman for over two years with no contact.

"The day after I was told, my husband brought home a small SD memory card he found in the back of a moving van that he used for work. Imagine the proverbial needle in a haystack: a 24-foot box truck and a tiny 1/4-inch SD card. He saw it and brought it to me because I was trying to move pictures from my old phone to my new one, and we thought this would work.

"He put in the SD card and opened the files. I glanced at them and had to walk away. The pictures were of my former co-worker, her children, birthday cakes... all happy, ?smiling times! How did they get to me through someone who had never met her? This is blowing me away! I have made arrangements to get the SD ?card to her sister. She will think I am crazy!"

That is an amazing coincidence, to say the least, Laura. Read about these other incredible coincidences that will blow your mind.

READER REPORT: Something tapped on my foot

"It was 1988. I was about eight years old and living in Las Vegas, Nevada," reports Aaron. "My family didn't make much money so I had to sleep in the same bed as my father until we moved from this place that I'm telling you about. I had my foot off the bed, which I haven't done to this day. I felt a tapping on my left foot and immediately froze. I remember thinking it's gotta be my brother. This went on for about a solid 30 seconds or so. I was scared to death. I quick moved to see if anything was there... and there wasn't. I've never heard of anyone with a tapping experience like this."

Aaron, I have received many other reports from people who have experienced tapping by unseen hands. Here are some of them:

I don't necessarily think what you experienced was a ghost. It could have been an involuntary muscle movement that could have felt like tapping. That is only a possibility and is not meant to negate your experience, which would have to be considered with any other paranormal experiences in your home at the time.

READER REPORT: Slip Backward or Forward in Time?

"My experience happened to me while I was at work on the night shift," reports Robert. "At my workplace I have access to cable television and a place to relax while working in-between patients. On this night I was watching a college football game and relaxing. I fell asleep for about 30 minutes and when I awoke the football game was still on.

"As I engaged in watching the game again, I realized that I had seen the plays already. The longer I watched, the more I realized that I was watching the same exact quarter of football that I had watched before I fell asleep! So this begs the question: Did I slip back in time 30 minutes or did I see the future before I watched the game?"

Or it could be that all football quarters are pretty much the same. Just kidding (sort of). We'll have to take you at your word, Robert, and trust that you know your football and really could tell that you had already seen the exact same plays. This takes instant replay into a whole other dimension! (Hey, if you could master this ability, you could clean up betting on game outcomes!)

Seriously, it's hard to say what exactly happened to you, but you can be assured that many other people have experienced similar slips in time. For example:

READER REPORT: Disappearing fork

"I live in Anchorage, Alaska," reports Zachariah. "Roughly one year ago, I had gotten home from school, done my homework, and started to unload and load our dishwasher. Bearing in mind I'd yet to have eaten lunch, I put a fork aside to use for some chicken ramen. Now, there was nothing unusual about our table. It had no open drawers, no parts removed, and no holes. I turned back for a moment to put some forks away, and when I turned back, the fork was just gone. It hadn't fallen; we'd have heard it. It didn't get put away and I didn't misplace it, as I had searched everywhere for it. This wasn't some unholy haunting or some trippy time paradox or anything, but it was definitely weird enough to make me stop and think for a while. How could the fork have disappeared? Where had it gone to? What forces could've acted upon it to make it move so suddenly? I think of these questions daily, but no solution comes to mind."

Thanks, Zachariah. I had a similar experience a few years back. I opened a can of Pringles and dropped the yellow lid on the tile floor of my apartment kitchen. I heard it hit the floor at my feet. I stooped to pick it up... and it was gone. I looked everywhere for it, assuming it had bounced or rolled away. I searched every inch of that small kitchen, including under the stove, under and beside the refrigerator, in all the cabinets (which were closed) -- even the upper cabinets. I even thought of that lid when I moved out of that apartment and cleaned everything out. The yellow lid was never found. It simply seemed to vanish into thin air.

There is a mystery known as the "borrower" phenomenon or "disappearing object phenomenon" in which an object vanishes from where it was recently placed -- usually a "normal" place -- with no explanation. Extensive searches turn up nothing. Then sometimes the object mysteriously returns -- in that normal place. It's weird. Read more about this phenomenon.

READER REPORT: The Ghost Was Cold

"In June, 2007, my husband and I took my elderly parents to visit my mother's sister in Clinton, ?Iowa," reports Carol. "My aunt had an unfinished basement that she had partitioned off with blankets and wires. We took one of these 'rooms' and my parents took another, only theirs was more like an actual room because it had a door.

"We went to bed after a long trip from Tennessee. We had just laid down and I felt the sensation that someone was watching me. I propped myself up on my right elbow and looked toward the curtain opening. There stood a female figure peeking around the curtain at me. I don't know why I did not say anything. I just watched.

"It looked as if she had her hair in rollers and something thrown over her shoulders. She went over to look at the furnace. She stood at the end of the bed looking at us, then turned around and did something to the furnace. The next day my husband and I were talking. He asked me if my aunt had come in our room the night before. I said, 'You saw it too?' After comparing notes, he had seen the exact thing I had. After telling my aunt, she was not surprised. She had never seen the apparition, but had heard footsteps, voices, and smelled cigarette smoke. It was a trip I'll not forget. I am not real exited about returning."

Thanks, Carol. Ghost sightings like this always have far more credibility when more than one person sees the apparition and is able to independently describe it in the same way. I know you said you don't want to return, but it would interesting if you could try to get more evidence there in the form of EVP, photos or even video. It seems you might have a good chance.

READER REPORT: Cemetery Hell Hounds

Here's something to keep in mind while you're out trick-or-treating near the cemetery this Halloween. Do you remember that terrifying scene from the original The Omen film when Damien's father and the photographer go into the cemetery to dig up the child's grave and are attacked by the hell hounds? Well, Danielle reports a similar experience in a graveyard in Iowa:

"This happened on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 8:15 p.m.," Danielle says. "My friend Sarah and I were walking with my dog Dasiy (a Jack Russel terrier) toward the graveyard. As we did, a strange wind blew past us and my dog growled and bared her teeth. We?continued?to walk, and as soon as we entered the graveyard, it felt like someone was watching us. We turned and saw two big dogs with big glowing?red eyes and baring their teeth at us. Now they seem to stalk us all the time."

Yikes! Anyone have advice for Danielle?

READER REPORT: The Disappearing Man

"Today, the strangest thing happened," reports Anna. "I was taking a walk with my father downtown at about 9 p.m. The streets were busy, and we were waiting to cross the street. Across the street from us was a man, an average-looking person who, like us, was waiting to cross. My father and I both saw him. As we waited, a bus passed between us. In the half-second it took for the bus to pass, the man was gone!

"My father and I could not believe our eyes. He was there just a second before! We looked around and he was nowhere to be seen. Even if he ran, he would still have been no more than 10 yards away. It was truly perplexing. We know for a fact that he could not have boarded the bus as it did not stop and passed by very quickly.

"Maybe the man was a ghost? An alien? Maybe he got somehow transported to another dimension? Whatever it is, my father and I hope that man is alright."

Thanks for that report, Anna. It really does sound perplexing. We are mystified by many other cases of unexplained disappearances:

READER REPORT: Who the heck is Gary Jamison?

"This happened to me in June, 2010 in Ainsworth, Nebraska," reports Steve about this incident of high strangeness. "I wanted to make a rice pudding but didn't have any milk. So I got in the car and went to the store to get some milk for my pudding. I parked the car and went into the store and bought the milk.

"The man at the desk said, 'Hi gary.' This was weird because my name isn't Gary; it's Steve. Anyway, I went home with the milk and I was making my puddings when the phone rang. I answered and the person on the other end asked, 'Is that Mister Jamison?' This was weird because by last name isn't Jamison either.

"I hung up. Later, after I had eaten my puddings, I realized I hadn't got the mail yet. I went outside to get the mail from the mailbox. All I had received was a letter. It was addressed to Gary Jamison! Weird!"

READER REPORT: Disturbances and apparitions

"About 12 years ago I lived in a house in the Sardis, Alabama area," reports Nicky, "and had an encounter with doors opening and closing by themselves and cold water turning on by itself. I also witnessed an apparition of an old man in an sparkling black cloak come out the kitchen, pause for a moment, then turn around and go back into the kitchen and disappear out of site. My two youngest nephews have seen it, too, and were scared to tears."

Thanks for the report, Nicky. The phenomena you first describe with the doors and the water sounds like typical poltergeist activity. But the sighting of the apparition suggests that something else is going on. You might indeed have a genuine haunting. The figure in the black cloak seems to fit in the ghost category of hooded beings, which is a mysterious, rather enigmatic type of apparition.

READER REPORT: Evidence of ESP?

"I had an extraordinary encounter with a elderly blind man," reports Leo F. "It occurred in what is now the Queen Street Mall in Brisbane, Australia sometime during the late 1980s, when the top of Queen Street was still open to traffic.

"I was walking along the footpath of Queen Street when I noticed a blind man who seemed to be lost. When I asked if he wanted to go anywhere in particular, he said he wanted to go to a certain bank. I waited for him, then we both walked toward the bus stop.

"On the way he said, 'You were born in July, weren't you? It was early in the month.... Was it the fifth?'

"That was correct. It was the first and last time I ever saw him."

Thanks for that report, Leo. It is well known that people who were born without one of their senses, such as sight, or lose it later in life, that some of their other senses, such as hearing and touch, become more sensitive and acute. We wonder if it's possible that one's psychic senses are also enhanced.

Those who study and research psychic abilities believe it is possible for anyone to develop their psychic powers. Here's how.

READER REPORT:Had a vision of the Sept. 11 attack

"I lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. for the first 25 years of my life," says Arnie. "I now live in Lawtey, Florida, a small town in the north central part of the state. This is where I resided on September 10, 2001.

"That night I had a very vivid and disturbing dream that took place in the the streets of Manhattan. Although I could not exactly ascertain what the cause was, many people were running around the streets in a frenzy and panic, almost like a scene in a Godzilla-type movie. I was awakened the next morning by a phone call from my son, telling me to quickly turn on the TV -- to see the horrifying sight of the planes crashing into the World Trade Center."

Like Arnie, many readers claim to have had visions of the September 11 attack before it happened. Did you or someone you know have such a vision, dream or premonition? Tell your story here.

READER REPORT: The call from Uncle Terrance

"This took place on 14 August in Lytham, St. Anne's U.K. at 10:41 p.m.," reports Lisa S. "I was in my room sitting on my bed when my phone started ringing. I answered it. I could hear static and a faint voice in garbled English. Then I could hear a clearer voice saying, 'Hello? Hello? Are you there?' I instantly recognized the voice. It was my Uncle Terrance. I replied, 'Is that you, Uncle Terrance?' The voice replied, 'Goodbye, Lisa...' and hung up. I later found out that he died from his cancer at 10:41 p.m. -- exactly when I got that call."

Thanks, Lisa. Many other readers have reported these phone calls from beyond. Consider these:

READER REPORT: Nazi Artifact Time Slip

"I had a very weird?experience?when I was 15 years old," reports Athena. "My mom and I had just moved into a house in New Jersey. After everything was unpacked, I went into my new room. I noticed something I didn't recognize sitting on my shelf -- a wadded-up red banner. I unfolded it and saw that it was a Nazi banner from World War II. (I happen to know that the shelf I found it on was made in Nazi Germany.)

"I set the banner back down on the shelf and walked to the living room to get my mom to come look at it. When my mom and I got to the shelf, the banner was gone! I am now 21 and still cannot figure out what happened to it or where it came from. I am convinced it was a time warp."

Thanks for that report, Athena. Incidents like this are known as time slips, where a person (sometimes several people) seem to encounter a thing or a place that appears to be from another time -- either the past or the future. They are also known as time warps or dimensional shifts. Here are more reports:
