Meteor showers... and mysterious devastation

Tunguska devastationThe Perseid meteor shower, which occurs every August at this time, peaks tonight. The Earth is bombarded regularly by meteors, which we see as shooting stars, but a few times a year we enjoy these concentrated showers of them.

There's nothing to worry about. Most meteors burn up completely in the atmosphere; sometimes they fall to the ground as meteorites. And on very rare occasions, they strike buildings, cars, even people. And even more rarely, if they are large enough, they cause devastation. (Just ask the dinosaurs.)

Is that what happened on June 30, 1908 when something exploded over the Tunguska region of Siberia, flattening trees over a 850 square mile area? There are many theories as to the mysterious cause, a meteor or asteroid being one of them. Some other theories are pretty far out. Read all about it.
